Vikings in talks with Tannehill

The backup QB as a mentor stuff is overrated.  The real mentor is KOC.

Yep, I mostly agree that the QB2 'mentor' thing is at a minimum overrated in reality. But there's some value there for JJM with a vet like Tannehill, Flacco, to point out some helpful things along the way and in the QB room.

Its intuitive for me to think there are plenty of instances during the year where the QB wants to talk through "issues" and needs to do that safely outside of the OC, QB coach or HC.

IOW, not get judged or dinged.

I think Udinski played that role and I wish he was still here for JJM's first year starting.

Isn't that what a mentor does?

Whether the mentor thing is overrated or underrated I don't know, but I do know having a quality backup who can win is underrated. I've heard people say well if JJ goes down, the season's over, who cares who your backup is. But it doesn't have to be a season-ending injury. If we're in a dog fight for the division with the Lions late in the year and McCarthy sprains an ankle, sidelining him for 4 weeks, you want to have a guy who can come in and win games over that stretch.

Quality backup and 'mentor' can be two different things. That's my point, get a guy that can win a few games if need be. And I didn't say anything about season-ending. Hell, I think LaFleur in GB did a hell of a job with Malik Willis. I'd take Tannehill over Flacco right now to win me 3 games as a backup.

Makes sense. Probably going to take a piece of dynamite to displace Tannehill from retirement and being away from his family in Tennessee.

What does the 'they hope they don't need him' type of thing mean?

I think the Vikings really want Cousins and both him and the Vikings will wait until after the draft to pursue something. Hopefully we can get an Osweiler type deal where we can get Cousins and a pick or two for taking on some of Cousins salary.

I can only assume they are referring to a potential setback in McCarthy's recovery, or there's a point in the season JJ isn't playing well and they consider sitting him down for a couple games.

The Tannehill thing was always a little strange to me. I just wonder if Flacco is asking for more than the Vikings are willing to pay, or maybe he thinks he can still land a starting spot somewhere

Why would Kirk want to sit on the bench in MN when he doesn't want to sit on the bench in Atlanta where he can go home every night to his wife and kids?

And why would the Vikings want to launch JJM's career by hiring a backup who makes 40 mil and wants to start, making JJM look over his shoulder every time things go wrong?

Let's stress out our new QB who is trying to make it in the NFL by bringing back the guy we got rid of because he hoovers up the payroll and doesn't produce any postseason success. Great plan!

They need a backup who is no threat to start, whose job is to hold a clipboard and pat the kid on the back and who doesn't cost the team anything significant.
