Schefter: Teams are going to ask the Vikings about JJ McCarthy

Very tempting, cause Sam is still so young at 27...

For me it would depend on what do I think the ceiling of JJM is? Even that haul might not be worth an elite, young qb on a rook deal.

I want to say JJ had one of the highest ceilings coming out. Due to the offense at Michigan that he was asked to run. He had the best numbers when the game mattered however in college. 3rd downs, game winning drives, and clutch situations. He was just so handcuffed with a strict run first system. KOC loves the kid. Says hes one of smartest players he has coached and always looking to get better and always asking questions on tape he watches. I think we have a good one.

If you included performance this season, I don't think Drake Maye would be a #1 rated QB this year.

I don't think Penix would be.

Like many may have said, the issue is more complex than trading JJ.
  1.  We have a lot of players that need contracts hence we need the cap to do this.
  2. Even as good as we are playing we have holes we need to fill (draft picks can help here but we will also need a few free agents for depth) hence money.
  3. I am sure we have a few players on rookie or one year deals that would need second contracts next year or so hence the need for cap space.
  4. Giving Darnold a three year deal (as being suggested at $40 plus mil a year pretty much puts us back the Cousins situation we worked so hard to get out of).
  5. Any extension or deal for Sam will significantly limit what we can do cap wise so that means we either have to trade JJ for draft picks (which in my opinion is terrible and too short sighted) or have to extend him in two or three years without knowing what we have since his rookie deal will be up.
  6. Keeping JJ gives us the best chance to build a solid team that will be around for the long run. We just don’t have the roster that warrants such an investment for one player even if that is the QB. KO has proven they can win without a top notch qb.

My uninformed proposal:
  1. Let Sam Walk (as tempting as it is to extend him and as much as it would be nice to get something in return). This makes us a more attractive spot and shows Daniel Jones we will take care of him.
  2. Sign Daniel Jones on a low end deal to “compete” with JJ (pretty much recreate the 2024 situation). To me this is the key decision.
  3. Let Mullins walk and draft a new QB or find one via free agency for QB3 with Rigpen
  4. Start extending the young and core players we need so we create cap space for JJ down the road.
  5. Also, we have an Addison problem to deal with soon looking at how well he is playing. Do we extend him and if so at what price when the time comes?

Addison is on year 2 of a first round rookie deal,  he isnt even part of the conversation for 2 more years
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

Mblack-

I appreciate the thought you have put into this but I think we can’t just let SD walk. He’s too valuable. We could franchise tag him. Expensive, and it might limit our FA signings but it’s only for one year and allows us to make a trade if someone makes an offer we can’t refuse. Or, we offer a 2 year deal at a price that is favorable to us. He may be willing to take less to stay in a situation where he is comfortable and had great success. Especially If he knows the $$ saved will go to strengthen the team and ultimately serve him well. Not everyone is Kirk Cousins.

I have a feeling this issue is going to get ugly. There are rumors flying around Twitter that the Vikings are ready to listen to offers for JJ McCarthy, which is obviously bullshit. The Vikings are not even thinking about that right now.

But this is going to push people into camps. Your'e starting to see some of the JJ haters (yes, there are some), who've been very quiet since the draft, start to stir, along with the Sam haters, who've been silent since September.

It's never a thoughtful discussion involving the pluses and minuses of each scenario, it's always JJ sucks and always has sucked and he'll never be a pro QB against Sam sucks and has always sucked and what he's doing will never be repeated....

Really looking forward to that....[eye roll]

The cap space argument is irrelevant.  Having a bunch of cap space to spend on FAs doesn't mean a thing if you don't have a high end QB...  whether that's a young QB on a rookie deal or a veteran you're paying market value.

Teams don't win and don't win consistently without a top 8 QB.  We seem to have that with Darnold right now.  This decision might be different if JJ hadn't missed most the entire regular season with the knee injury.  Coaches would have seen him more in practice during the season and would have a better gauge on his on the field progression.  I think they know he has the leadership traits, mental side, etc but we had a few months of OTAs, training camp, and 2 preseason games to see him against love bullets.  It doesn't mean he won't be our starter if we keep Sam next year.  It just gives us a good option short-term until JJ beats out Sam (or doesn't) for the starting spot.

People have dumb opinions, nothing you can do about that.  Lol

Honestly, I'm happy with our QB situation right now and I'm sure the Vikings are too.  We have a high end veteran we rehabilitated and is playing some good football.  We have the option to keep him around for at least one more season AND we have a great human being who also happens to be a talented QB prospect just waiting to show he's "the guy".

We are in the rare spot of potentially having two franchise level QBs and one is on a rookie deal.  This is what we've wanted forever as fans...  A good starter and a young guy backing him up who is a talented kid that can develop at his own pace and be the guy to take over when he's ready.  I don't get why anyone would be upset about that.

IT dont get much better than that from a personnel standpoint...I'll continue preaching; KAM is a pretty happy camper heading into work these days!
