RandBall: In Atlanta, Falcons fans got a sour taste of Kirk Cousins at his worst
#21
So, he had less practice and preseason due to injury, is with a new team/players, and got NO preseason reps in attempts to keep him in bubble wrap.

The haters will pretend that he's somehow suddenly incompetent (apparently Diggs, JJ, and Thielen threw those passes to themselves) and was never heralded for leadership, preparation, etc...

...but, I think this is a combination of him not being as "gelled" and really back in game form as desired, due to over-protective coaching...and also, it's hardly the first time the Steel Curtain and/or a Watt brother jacked up a QB's day.
STRETCH RUN, VIKINGS...LET'S END THIS SEASON WITH BANGS!

He was not very good. Atlanta paid too much to get him!

This is EXACTLY why
@Vikings
GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah needs a few more years here, at minimum, despite a couple poor draft classes. Outside of that realm, he’s been ELITE.

He moved on from former #Vikings QB Kirk Cousins when HC Kevin O’Connell didn’t. Per
@DMRussini
, even the #Falcons know now he’s “not the same guy” ?

“I even had some conversations with people in the Atlanta building in terms of Kirk. So Kirk is healthy. Kirk is 100% recovered from the Achilles. But Kirk is also not the same guy at 36 years old coming of an Achilles injury. Fine line there and how we discuss it.”

I really think KC has to shake off some rust and is maybe fighting off some demons in his head with the achilles.

Not saying his fine, but its way too early to toss dirt on his grave.

Doesnt get any easier for them this week though lol.

Kirko looks bad again? The spotlight heat will be really hot..

He's a vet and an excellent thrower of the football, so I totally agree....too early to judge hardcore. Atlanta plays at Philly, so he's going to feel the heat. I think most QBs had some level of rust last weekend.

I think another bad to subpar outing for Kirko is going to make things a lot tougher on a variety of levels. Philly can't lose enough for me, so go Falcons.

Fans and talking heads saying Kirk looks bad is one thing (he does). But if the team is worried internally... YOIKES.

If you listen to HC Morris's comments about Kirk's play week one, you get the sense there's worry. He said he didn't play well, straight up. Right after the game, Morris said about Kirko: "I'm not overly concerned". I thought that was kind of a big statement.

Here's my guess about what Atlanta is thinking: lets not overreact......but the low level concern is they think he might be a bit washed. Kirko has time to pull it out and be fine. Will he?

I don't think Kirk's skills would experience significant age related decline in one year. I mean the guy was in the conversation for MVP before the Achilles injury. Was leading the league in passing TDs after 8 games and was competing almost 70% of his passes and averaging 290 yds per game.
He had a 103 passer rating missing Justin Jefferson for a couple games...

I think more than anything he doesn't trust the Achilles. It's messing with his head and throwing mechanics. Add in the fact that he has a new team, new offense, and new teammates that he's still building chemistry with... no surprise he is struggling.

If he can't get past the Achilles mentally, the Falcons wasted a bunch of money. But if he does, I think we'll see him play better this season.

I tend to think he'll play better. He's had shit games like this with us too and recovered well. But if he does continue to stink while Darnold continues to play well, KOC's stock and reputation is going to go through the roof.
