Jets to move on from Wilson
#21
I know this isn't a what-QB-do-you-like-in-this-draft thread, but still. Putting aside the QBs likely to go in the first 2 rounds, I like Tanner McKee from Stanford. Like Herndon Hooker, he's a bit older than the ideal because he did a 2 year Mormon mission, but he's a 6'6" QB who is athletic enough and has really good arm talent. He should be available in the middle rounds. Give him a couple of years behind Cousins and we may have Cousins' eventual successor.

I'd totally roll the dice on Wilson in Minnesota. Arm talent, athletic, can make all the throws...might just need some time in the right situation with the right coaching. It makes a difference. Look at Mayfield under McVay. The Jets are not, and we're never really set up to groom a young QB. Saleh is a defensive head coach and that staff doesn't have a lot of great offensive minds with any track record of success. Throw in Becton missing the season and Breece Hall getting hurt and it hasn't helped Wilson's cause. All their bigger injuries have been on the offensive side of the ball.
The Vikings need a real contingency plan at quarterback. Cousins is under contract for one more season where he will be 35 years old. I would love to have Wilson sit behind Cousins for a season learning, maturing, under the tutilidge of KOC. That would be a really ideal scenario for both Wilson and the Vikings. If he proves worthy then the job would be his in 2024

I'm convinced Wilson will never be a starter because the Jets are.

Can teams be wrong? Sure, but in 50 years of watching this shit, I can't remember a single instance where a top 10 drafted QB was given up on by the team who drafted him and then went on to become the QB everyone expected somewhere else.

Yes, I'm aware of Brees, Gannon, etc. But those are totally different situations. Jets have given up on Wilson in only his 2nd season. That says a lot right there.

Now, all that said, you have to factor in the cost. I just don't want us to give up anything to kick his tires. But for a 7th? Heck, I'd bring in Ruth Buzzi for a 7th.

Jim Plunkett and Steve Young were a couple quarterbacks who revived their careers with new franchises after sucking early in their careers

I pretty much agree with all of this. The one x-factor is "New York". I am not going to put much weight in that basket but there are some weird circumstances where guys couldn't handle the largest media market in the US. The pressure is exponentially higher on a QB too. I would take him on a 6th/7th round pick. But there are teams more desperate who'll give up something half decent for hope.

To me, the Jets roster has deficiencies from both players (injuries) and coaches. So, getting an accurate read on Wilson's overall bust potential is difficult to gauge at this point. He'd have a much better shot at developing under KOC and with the Vikings personnel on offense than he ever would in New York.

The odds are extremely low that Zach will amount to anything. Some team will try. And fail. And wash, rinse and repeat in the NFL. This is very quick to yank a highly drafted QB and walk away (if that happens), so to your point, it must be even uglier behind the curtain.

Plunkett was rookie of the year and then was traded for three 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder. So...not hardly in the same category as ZW. But Young isn't a bad example.

That's a good point about NYC.

With Wilson (the other one) sucking out loud in Denver, no progress from Mac Jones, Justin Fields, or Trey Lance...and terrible QB situations in Carolina, New Orleans, Washington, Indy, Houston, etc., I agree, someone will overpay for Wilson.

But sending a high pick to the Jets pretty much prevents you from drafting a QB. You're not going to tell Wilson, "hey, we gave up a high pick for you, we believe in you," and then take a QB high in the draft. It's just hard to see a team believing in Wilson that much.

Watch, it will be Carolina, who helped out the Jets on their last QB failure by trading for Sam Darnold.

Wilson, Darnold, Sanchez, Pennington...all 1st rounders. Three were top 5 picks. But hey, the best QB they drafted (Geno in the 2nd) is still playing...for someone else.

@MaroonBells Plunkett started his career in New England and played there for five seasons. The team was 23-38 during his tenure, and he threw 62 TD's to 87 INT's at a 48% completion clip. He was not good and his team was not good.
Just goes to show you how much the game has changed though. Plunkett threw an obscene amount of INT's during his career and is considered a borderline Hall of Famer.
