This is what, the third straight year we have had offseason struggles with Danielle and his contract? News that his agent is being unreasonable and his upset about losing Dre. Trade him then as the dude does not wanna be in Minnesota and he’s already benefitted enough the last two years without hardly playing. Get a great return, draft one of these DE’s early and let’s move on
But it's the exact same with your boy Cousins, and we'll be dealing with his contract shit again next offseason with no long term solution in play. Hard to believe that we continue to let Cousins bend us over a barrel with his contract at the expense of losing guys like Hunter, who we can't find the money to pay. Hunter is 27, had more sacks before the age of 25 then anybody in NFL history, had 6 sacks in seven games last season before tearing his pec. He's a freak and an elite pass rusher. The injuries the last two seasons have been unfortunate weird injuries. I absolutely do not think he's "injury prone" because he's been fine the 5 years prior. Huge mistake trading Hunter so they could pay and extend Kirk for one more season
What are you talking about? First off, Cousins took a deal that cut his cap by about $14 million to give the team more cash to find some players. Also, he has a reasonable cap next year. They won’t need to mess with his for two years now. He’s making the 6th or 7th highest QB pay, which is for once commensurate with his overall value.
You have to let go of your obsession. His contract is team friendly and reasonable. His play has been excellent. He’s done what he can do. Now it’s on guys like Hunter to work with the team. Just like he can’t play defense, he can’t make Hunter sign a new cap freeing contract.
Obsession? I like Kirk, but I'm not in the camp that believes continuing to retain him is in the best interest of the franchise. We'll once again be negotiating with him next offseason entering the final year of his contract and having to figure out how to juggle the cap. Chances are this team will be pretty average again next season with all the transition, so retaining him for a year, maybe two does what for us exactly?

Wonder which side leaked this…?
The Vikings FO?
If Hunter is worth what he thinks he is, then another team will trade for him AND sign him to the deal he is looking for.
if no deal occurs, DH will have zero leverage negotiating with the Vikings.
Vikings FO lets the market determine what Hunter is worth, shrewd move.

Ummm, let's mention some differences:
Cousins has been playing.
Hunter has barely played, but has still been getting paid.
People talk about Cousins "costing the team defense" and similar weak-tea BS, but again...when Hunter, Pierce, and others pull in some big $$ and miss considerable time, I'm gonna be more inclined to back the guy who keeps showing up and producing. In fact, I think it's gotta be close to a fuggin' syndrome that every Vikings issue is now attributed to Cousins...it'll be called "KirkBentMeItis" or something.
Even when other QBs had contracts higher than his, that spotlight stayed on him. When he allowed money to be pushed forward to help the team's cap hit in 2020, people were already mad at him for 2022. It's fuggin' stupid, beyond obsessive babble.
I'd love the front office to pull some of its patented miracles and keep Hunter, bring back Peterson, etc etc etc...but, if Hunter has truly been snarling every year and is doing it again after getting big money for half a season? He wants the check, not to be a Viking.
Y'all are pissing and moaning about "greed" in the wrong direction.

The thing is... I don't see where Hunter fits in a 3-4 defense. He isn't playing with his hand in the dirt and it's no guarantee he'll be an elite pass rusher at OLB. Given his contract antics the past two years and the injuries, now might be the perfect time to get some valuable draft capital and free up some money while we acquire players who are a better fit for our new defensive scheme.

These are both excellent points. Add to that a neck injury serious enough to require surgery and Hunter's desire to break the bank, it's time to move on.
Giants and Jets both need edge rushers, but they can target the draft for that. Miami might be a landing spot. Can we finagle the #26 pick from them? Maybe.
The ace in the hole?
Very similar athlete at $871,000 vs the cap.

You're not obsessed? This thread is about Hunter. First thing you bring up is Cousins.

Unfortunately, the fact this news is out and not just a trade being announced tells me that our haul won’t be that big for him, if any. Hopefully I’m wrong and time will tell but nothing says, “we value this guy” quite like “we’re actively shopping him!”
I cant see how we get more then the Bears got for Mack.
Age and trajectory. But I do think we're all going to be disappointed when we see the return. I could be wrong, but I think the Vikings might've waited too long. I think they would've gotten more if they'd traded him as soon as they knew they were going to a 3-4.
Right now we have a hard deadline coming in three days and everyone knows it. Those deadlines typically come with a poor offer from a team who wants to avoid competing with other teams. Hunter's injuries and contract are not helping.
Trade Hunter, resign Barr. Let Barr be the sack artist he never got to be under Zim. Buffalo was probably the best trade partner but they signed Von Miller. I love Hunter but I’m tired of the contract drama.

I agree, I dont see a DH trade happening...
I also think someone of his athleticism and age could be quite effective in a 3/4

Don't forget about Wonnum too... he played as a standup rusher in college and had success. He might actually be a better fit as a pass rusher at OLB than he was at DE in a 4-3.

If that knee isn't degenerative, giddy up.
