Everyone wants that fresh young mind as their OC, but sometimes
you have to risk that young means inexperienced.  The downfall with Zimmer is that he’s so
hands off on the offensive side of the ball, that inexperienced means there’s
no one else to provide the leadership on the offensive side of the ball.  I think Zimmer needed to bring in some more
wisdom on the offensive side of the ball as an assistant, or he needed a legit
DC and he would work with the offense.  Being inexperienced on both sides of the ball
at the coordinator positions was super dumb.

I don't think we know if he is hands off or hands on.  I hear both to criticize him.  I am over Zimmer as our head coach.  I think he is a defensive genius, but the turnover at OC has killed this team.  But again, he has had experienced leadership on that side, Norv, Kubiak Sr, Pat Shurmur, Tony Sparano.  Then he has gone young and innovative, Deflip, Steph and Kubiak jr.  The only ones that have worked out have been hired after one good year.

I would have loved to see him bring Shurmur back.  I think Shumur was the best we had under zimmer and since he flopped a second time as head coach, he probably would have stuck around.

Yeah, that's my take exactly.  Getting Shurmur back would have been huge.  I feel like he was the only OC we had that was both competent at the big picture items and creative with the play designs.  I do think Zimmer probably needed to bring in a big name DC at some point and hand the defense off to them and become a true HC.  I'm a little surprised they didn't hire Kubiak Sr as an offensive assistant to help his kid out, but maybe only 20 hours a week or something.  I have to imagine there's a bunch of weird things the OC has to do that no one really pays attention to until they break that he could have caught early, but instead we're learning the hard way.

Well we have a coach that likes to have the running game control the offense. Funny how we start and end games with Kirk slinging it and the ball is moving up and down the field. Dalvin's last 13 carries went for 19 yards and that's probably because our offense is predictable and boring as shit. There is hardly any pre snap motion or misdirection that keeps the defense guessing. Just let Kirk sling the ball and throw it deep...it usually works

I think he was a defensive genius; I think the game may have passed him by.   I also think a part of his defensive genius was running an offensive scheme that helped to inflate defensive stats.  There is no doubt in my mind that a run first, possession offense (if successful) helps defensive stats because it reduces the number of plays in a game because of the clock continuing to run (as compared to incomplete passes).   As the rules changed and offenses evolved, I think Zimmer didn't evolve with them except as it relates to how CB had to be less handsy.

I think he still is a defensive genius.  But the league rules are slanted heavily towards offense, so a great D doesn't have much bite anymore.  

You may have a point about the offensive scheme helping the defensive stats, but that is pretty much the point of a ball control offense.  Keep their defense on the field and yours off.  They can't score points when their offense is on the sideline.  It doesn't negate that his D was great at lots of stats, like 3rd downs, pressures...
