Seriously look at the video and audio capabilities harder then the Smart options.  Yes wireless connections are nice but look at it from the stand point of a Roku is like 20 bucks and if it out dates just spend another 20 bucks.  Spending on the better picture and audio quality is money well spent
and all those streaming apps are jacking their prices,  how soon before we go back to cable or dish for our feeds to save money?   and before anybody says never,  would anybody have ever thought that vinyl records would be a thing again after they died in the early 80s?  B)

Yep. I've had Youtube TV for a year and it's been great, but they just raised prices by $15/mo.
So my nice $50 for internet, $50 for TV cost is out the window. I'm moving soon and will be looking into the introductory cable company bundles to see if that's actually a better value now, for one year.

Hell I still buy the DVD, Blue Ray and Electronic copy packs simply because I camp enough (ok glamp) that I use the discs.  But at home with Wifi I use vudo or movies anywhere.

Yeah, 10 year old technology is really antiquated in today's electronics world. The kid is fine at community college though, right?  Smile

At the bold... that's funny.
While we are at it, don't you think you should upgrade the speakers too? They may be too small for the new receiver.
See the bold part above :-)

This is very good advice...

At the end of the day I did an Apple TV over a Roku cause our house is already filled with IOS and the interconnected possibilities are pretty cool. Got it thrown into the deal too.

Guy @ Best Buy Magnolia told me the avg home theatre system today falls in the $5k-$10k range!  :o

Yep that is because home theater now is whole house media.  You can still do a decent single room that will rival a movie theater for $1,000.  But I have experienced the 10K home theater and it was like going to a movie theater.  Sub shakers in the seats, Dolby 9.1 and 4K 80 inch TV.  It was nice but a little much unless you have a house big enough to have room strictly dedicated to that.  When I was really into it my kids were little and playing a movie to the potential of my current system meant it had to be movie they liked, once they were in bed the levels had to be turned down to where it did not matter.

Apple TV is good as well, streaming media from a phone or Ipad is really nice (if you like Apple devices).  I choose Roku because it was cheap and delivered good video.  If I start traveling again for work I may invest in that direction as it is much easier to carry movie media with you.
