It's funny the outrage over guys that most of us have never watched (or focused on) or heard of prior to them being drafted.

And he could have been had much later. With Guards and Receivers and higher potential Safeties sitting there. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Willekes does more. And we're hardly alone in this opinion. Even amongst Vikings-centric analysts this was the biggest head scratcher of the Draft. And Patterson isn't perfect. Wither Jalyn Holmes? Ade Aruna? Bower? He didn't pick Everson. The record is good, it's not above reproach.

It's just stupid. We just added 15 players to our team, stocked up on next year's draft picks and added FOUR players who, at one time or another, we're considered 1st rounders. Sure, I put Wonnum among my dislikes but only because it felt to me like we got our DLs a round later than we intended to. I could be wrong but I sorta get the feeling Rick regrets trading that three down. Nothing against Wonnum himself. The first clip I saw was the one they showed on the draft broadcast. But to those who think he was a late rounder, that's not true. McGinn had him right where he went. Right after Jonathan Greenard and Alex Highsmith and that's exactly where he went. And McGinn is never wrong. It's creepy.

I usually, and did this time, usually put that in my review disclaimer. Their is zero outrage on my part. Zero outrage because I think we nailed the draft in the first 3 rounds which matter most. Once you starting going round 4 and beyond it is a total crap shoot and I certainly have no idea. But I gave my opinion on picking for a different position need, that is all. Now we also all know that 65% of NFL rosters are made up of guys who were drafted 4th round and beyond including UDFA. So 35% from the first 3 rounds. I am and have been a vocal supporter of Spelly since he became our official GM after the triangle BS. Spelly has been very good at finding those late round gems such as Diggs. I would trust the coaches and Spelly 110% over any of my picks. Again I offered my opinion with zero outrage. It is for fun, like blogging with my fellow diehards...SKOL

That is the most positive Souhan article I've read in years, PF. Wow.
I think what some are saying is this could be a seminal draft for the Vikings. The one where its said that this changed it all. It has that under-the-radar buzz that is exciting. I think the Vikes did something very right this weekend potentially. As how it specifically relates to this moment in time for this team and how it filled the gaps in.

Every time our pick came up, NFL Network posted that graphic about the Vikings having the highest % of players they drafted on the roster.
Didn't one or both Aruna and Bower blow out a knee or Achilles? We gonna pin Floyd on Patterson too? An opinion is one thing, trying to justify them with half truths or straight up bull shit is intellectually dishonest.

But all on other teams now. Weatherly, Odenigbo, Hunter and please, please, please Watts. It's impressive. And not nearly the 'Belicheat above reproach' pantheon that some make it out to be. A pantheon I don't believe in. Show me the baby, not the labor. Prime Hunter + Emerging Ifeadi + Wonnum/Wellekes does not profile to be as good as Prime Hunter + fading Griffin + Emerging Ifeadi + Weatherly. The good news is that Emerging Watts and Lynch should be more effective at getting to the QB than Shamar. The same Shamar the team is reported to be very high on despite his consistent lack of QB pressures. I also think Capers is going to employ some 3-4 fronts and Wonnum and Lynch both have experience as stand up rushers in that system. I would image the standard look would be Pierce in the middle, flanked by Watts and Johnson, if you're following the traditional Bigger DEs profile. Barr and Hunter at OLB, Kendricks and Wilson inside. But you can have sub packages employing that same look manned by a lot of the Young Uns, too. Johnson in the middle flanked by Herc & Lynch. Ifeadi and Wonnum Outside (Willekess too), Dye and Wilson inside. I find it interesting how the 3 D-Line guys from Day 3 all have played on both 4-3 and 3-4. Shoot, Lynch has played all 3 spots on the Line AND played LB too in that scheme. Going to be Interesting to see if Capers gets enough time to get any of those looks installed. I like that you can't immediately guess which look they'll employ just because a Rookie's in there.

If you were to go back 5 and maybe 10 years I bet he would be towards the bottom 5 in drafting players who got starting time with the Patriots. Many fans say either Brady made Belichick or visa versa. I don't think this year will be a fair judgment of that argument. Brady is what 42? Age matters to a player in a bad way which age for a GM/coach should actually improve in terms of drafting. Now I am not trying to ignore Belechicks pre game and in-game preparation he is one of the best. I am just saying the draft = awful. O'Brien from the Belichick tree looks to be worse in the few years he has been GM/coach...awful. Packers GM - Gutekuntz 2 years look horrible but I am judging this year very harshly they did get Savage and a starting LG last year (injury fill-in but looked OK) IMO - I think Mayock and Gruden are awful as well but I am judging not just the draft but the Khalil Mack and Cooper trades. |
