I sort of expect them to loosen up quite a bit, if not come out entirely. But ankles are used to be taped pretty tightly. I'm no doctor, but wouldn't the tape hold everything together? 
it will certainly help,  but if its wrapped that tight that there is no flex in the joint,  how effective of a route runner will he be?

no sure if you are joking or not,  but they likely glued the cut shut when they stitched it back up unless the bleeding was to profuse.  really hard to guess what they would have done without knowing the location and honestly I would be they have shit at their disposal that I am not aware of.    back in my day.... tough skin and dirt made a good temporary bandage. :p
