Wow, what a fascinating read. I had never heard any of those takes before.
Love this: Robert Smith, Vikings running back: My agent called me on the first lunch break of the first training camp practice and said “How’s Randy look?” And I told him, “I’ve never seen anything like this.” I had a track background, ran in a race against Carl Lewis. I’ve never seen anyone like Randy. I’ve never seen anyone as smooth. I told my agent after that first practice that if he stayed healthy, he’d be in the Hall of Fame.
That's what I remember after watching Randy's Marshall stuff. I've said this a million times, but it wasn't his size or speed that stood out to me as much as his fluidity. He glided like a magnet train.
In the summer of 1998 Dan Hildredth ran the Viking Underground website. I remember him writing about a young, lanky and very fluid rookie WR...He'd never seen anything like it -- was downright giddy.
The years go fast...
Yep, I remember Dan. I was on that site. But as a draft junky I knew about all about Randy Moss, the troubled receiver from Marshall. In fact, I still remember, the first post I ever started on that site was "If Randy Moss falls do you take him?" :-)
Maybe it's bromanticism, but my love and admiration for Randy the player has grown over time, not waned. He's on my Mt Rushmore now and wasnt before for character reasons.
Dare I say he defined the Vikings in a way for his era in the same way Page or Tark did in the 70's?

I dont know why I read that...Maybe the same reason you cant help but look at the car accident you're driving by.
I was at that Falcons game...
Didnt define me as a Viking fan, but it was the last time I sobbed after a game since the 77 SB loss. I just remember walking back to my car in disbelief on that cold, January night.
09 kicked me in the nadz too, not like 98 though. Neither did 2018 or 41/donut.
I think that game changed most fans. A previous post mentioned Cunningham's reaction. I don't know if winning or losing is in gods hands or fate or whatever. Just since that lose I've come to realize it will happen if it does when I don't expect it. I've had this thought before. In 1998 I expected we would win it all. In 2000 I hoped but Didn't expect. In 2009 I believed but really thought it would come down to us or the Saints. Never thought we'd lose a game we were the better team. Last year the same except were weren't the better team. Maybe the closest we ever gotten to getting back was 1987. One dropped pass away. I thought for sure we were one and done going into the playoff. This is why I believe it will happen, if it does, when I least expect it.

Nelsons drop at the goal-line wasnt for the win - but a tie to send the game into OT. But I hear yah.
You know the story behind that play right?
AC was supposed to run the corner route in the end zone dragging a DB with him. Didnt run the route deep enough and the db made a play on Nelson. Football, the ultimate team game.
I still feel the very best Vikings team that never went to the SB wasnt 98 or 87. Its the team that lost a Division Game to The Cowboys - the infamous Hail Mary game.

You are not alone thinking that team that lost to the Cowboys on that play was the best. Others have said it though the years.

I thought we were the better team against Philly with Foles at QB. Most did. Remember, even though the game was in Philly, we were favored. Vegas liked us by 3.5. 6 out of the 7 experts on ESPN picked the Vikings. 7 out of the 8 experts at CBS picked the Vikings.
Foles played out of his mind and we were out-coached. End of story.
I am too young to remember the 70s losses. But as to 98, 09 and last year, we were damn good in each year, but had weaknesses. I think last year we were the most complete, but were weak at QB and RB. Losing starters will do that to a team. 98, Randle was on one leg and Cunningham wasn't a smart QB. 09 was a very good team, could have been our best shot as Indy was rather weak in the AFC that year. But Favre had a tendency to force stupid throws, Adrian fumbled too much and the Saints were dirty.

I thought we were as good as Philly. I'm pointing out that it's never felt as ''certain'' since 98. That's the difference. I think most would have to agree.

09 felt pretty certain as well. We were as good as philly last year, but I had a bad feeling that we were spent after the miracle and then having to go on the road.

I would certainly agree with that. It's funny, living in Denver I get to listen to nothing but Bronco talk on the radio. And they were recently talking about that '98 season. The way they went on and on about how they wanted no part of that Vikings team and how they really dodged a bullet that year. It was interesting to hear them basically say that they thought they had little chance against the Vikings even though the Broncos were a pretty good 14 and 2 team.

I think we lost 3/4 games in December of 09. Win one more and we'd have those bastards up here. F'ing Saints. I still hate em and the MN Miracle doesnt make up for it for me.
Same thing last year. If the Vikings ever figure out a way to beat Detroit @ USB? We'd have that Philly game here.
Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda...
