They've arguably have had the best RB and the best WR of their day and did little with them. They've overpaid for big time flops like QB Joey Harrington Christian Ponder and WR Mike Williams Cordarrelle Patterson and since the days of Sanders Moss, have ignored the RB WR position.
Until that team puts their money into defense offense, they'll always be the ugly step-child of the NFC North.
Wanted to see how few words would have to be changed... Could have stuck with defense prior to Coach Z.

We Viking fans have a lot of historical reasons to look down at the Lions and sneer...Not sure thats the reality anymore? I think they could make the case that as of lately at least, they have surpassed the Vikings in NFC North hierarchy.
Nah, we did win the NFC North 2 seasons ago. They will always be the laughing stock of the NFCN. Even with the bears sucking as they do, Detroit emits a foul odor.

I haven't been to Detroit but is it worse than the town of Green Bay? Now that's sh*t hole.
Green Bay sucks, but Detroit is worse...far worse...

Good points...especially at QB, but we didn't overpay them. We've had a good defenses during those years and I don't think we ignored the WR position. Several WR's didn't pan out post Moss (Troy obviously) but we had Sidney who was pretty good when he was here and Cordarrelle was never used properly and will be an asset to the Raiders.
I think our biggest weakness was at QB. Following Culpepper and except for 2009, it's been a more-miss-than-hit proposition at signal caller. Hopefully, Slingin' Sammy can stabilize it for years to come. The RB position sans AD will be the thing to watch this year. I believe we have the horses, but we'll know soon enough.

definitely, the bears are up and down but pretty much the bears... the lions can be great and be the buzz of the league and still not do anything of value. they make me feel good to be a Vikings fan when it comes to dealing with heartbreaking seasons. so rarely is there any excitement in detroit in the pre season.

The Vikings have been the better team, but I honestly didn't know which team you were talking about after the first sentence of that original post because it applied so well to both teams.
Well we have an ownership group that took something like 6 years to figure out that reinventing the wheel wasn't really a great idea.

Matthew Stafford - QB - Lions
NFL Network's Stacey Dales reports there's "internal optimism" Matthew Stafford will be extended in the next two weeks.
With Derek Carr resetting the market, the Lions should already have Stafford's deal in place. Stafford projects for close to the $25 million AAV the Raiders gave Carr, though he’s older and coming off a slightly worse 2016. The Lions are hoping to have something done around the start of training camp.
