Laquon Treadwell posts cryptic tweet after roster moves (STFU!)
#11
A friend of his was cut and a lot of people were calling for him to be released too. Yes, it's part of the business and he should probably have not made that tweet,  but athletes are people too and I get why he felt hurt.

I get that, but if I don't perform, and then talk bad about my boss's (WR Coach) boss's (OC) boss's (Coach) Boss (GM)... I lose my job.

I get that it's a different business than I work for, but the general public doesn't have much sympathy for that.

Smart guys learn that is a business and act professional or they find themselves out of it.
Just ask Kapernick.

It was something he should have kept in house, but we're in that tough spot where as the team get more serious about going all in that some familiar faces may be gone. For teams like New England that happens all the time, but just off the top of my head guys like Bridgewater, Bradford, Keenum, Wright, McKinnon, Sharrif Floyd, and Tom Johnson are all gone. We could also end up losing guys like Newman and Robison. So the difference this year, is we're not just losing random or bottom of the roster players, but a lot of guys who have been key pieces of the team over the past few seasons. I think that has tempered some of the excitement for fans this off-season and the players are feeling that too. It will subside as the off-season goes on and the excitement will likely ramp up to even higher levels, but that is the cost of going for it all.

As for your work analogy, if you do a bad job or say something dumb to your boss, then only a few people are aware of it. If you're an athlete and make the same mistake, then everyone knows and random people are calling for your head and not just talking about it, but sending those messages directly to you. General common sense still applies, but we live in a strange world.

This is a huge year for Treadwell, cutting Wright hurts, but it opens up more chances for him. Cousins is also better about going through his progressions than Keenum was, so more balls should get to the 3rd and 4th options. That being said, the Vikings have been looking at receivers pretty hard this offseason, so I wouldn't be shocked if we drafted a WR earlier than expected like the 2nd or 3rd round.

Good post.

Wright is a pure slot WR while Tread is an outside WR.  I don't think cutting Wright will necessarily give Treadwell more opportunities because we will have to have another slot WR.  But I agree with you in terms of Cousins getting further through progressions and that hopefully resulting in more opportunity for Treadwell on the outside.

I really wish we had a stronger presence on the outside to be honest.  Don't get me wrong, AT and Diggs have done great, but if you can rotate those guys into the slot from time to time to switch it up I think it would open more possibilities up for our offense.  I'm hopeful that Tread can become that guy, but I have all but lost faith.

That's the thing with Theilan - he thrived in the slot this year but can also move outside.  Digg's can also go slot but has looked better on the outside and that is why the duo thrived this year.

Neither Wright nor Treadwell can move to each other's spots.  Wright is a pure slot WR and Tread is a pure outside WR.  We will need to find a slot replacement for Wright if he is not brought back or maybe it is one of the young guys on the roster, I don't know?

When Tread was on the field last year it was on the outside and clearly as the 3rd read option 99% of the time.  He is a good blocker of course.  I think Cousins will look for Tread more then Sam/Case have in the past - Sam because of no time and Case because he was so dependent on those two.  Also depends on the new OC and if he moves Tread up on the progression for the QB reads.  Shurmur sure didn't seem to move Tread up any further then 3rd option.  Tread is going to have to earn it to be a second or first read on the outside.

It would be the right time for Tread to get on the same page with the new QB and start developing some trust.  Its a clean slate for him with Cousins.  Its a chance to move up and earn some more opportunities.
