Dobbs... Glad we didn't bring him back for a second stint. Great guy, but not much of a passer.

Ultimately you hope it doesn't matter, but I think the difference to me would be who's been the better quarterback recently and that's Flacco who's thrown 25 TD passes in a backup roll the last two seasons. Tannehill was terrible in Tennessee in 2023 and didn't play last season.

The Minnesota Vikings are closing in on a veteran quarterback to pair with J.J. McCarthy.

While the starting job was in question when Aaron Rodgers was considered a candidate, any other quarterback signed that this stage of free agency would merely be a backup who could support the 22-year-old's development.

According to Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the Vikings have discussed potentially signing former Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill, 36, has 11 NFL seasons of experience and would be a competent backup who could play well in a pinch.

But whether he'd be willing to be a mentor has come into question after a recent clip from his days in Tennessee has resurfaced on social media.

After the Titans drafted Malik Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Tannehill gave the rookie quarterback a message that he would not cede any ground to him ahead of training camp.

“We’re competing against each other. We’re watching the same tape and doing the same drills,” Tannehill said in May 2022. “I don’t think it’s my job to mentor him, but if he learns from me along the way then that’s a great thing.”

Tannehill was coming off a 12-win season when the Titans decided to hit the refresh button at quarterback, a move that has not panned out well for the franchise that now holds the No. 1 pick in this year's draft.

There were likely some hard feelings as he was benched after throwing two interceptions in a Week 2 blowout against the Buffalo Bills. However, Tannehill returned to win his next six starts.

Tannehill eventually embraced his role as a veteran backup the following year as 2023 second-round pick Will Levis was named the Week 1 starter.

His comments sparked scrutiny on social media with many fans raising their concerns.

However, Tannehill has perspective now.

He was once a Pro Bowl quarterback of a team that made it to the AFC Championship with him at the helm. He also paid with the expectation that he would play and not have to compete for his job.

If Tannehill, who did not play for a team last season, joined the Vikings, the expectations would be clear.

Is it possible no one is interested in either one? Or that neither player is that interested in going through the rigors of another season just to be a back up and a last resort? If we are looking to find someone to mentor McC. Why not see if either is interested in starting a coaching career? Asst QB coach or something.maybe holding off on signing anyone until cuts start happening

Imo its because youvwamt whoever to be here in time to actually learn the playbook and do whatever they can to help JJM through the offseason as well as be up to speed when the games statrt.  We assume JJ will be the starting QB,  but we also thought he would have been starting last year down the stretch.  The roster they have assembled cant be left to whoever they can throw in late in the game.

Are you saying is no one interested in making millions of dollars to hold a clipboard? I think someone will be.

The backup QB as a mentor stuff is overrated. The real mentor is KOC.

KOC can do a lot,  but he cant speak to starting an NFL game,  let alone the pressures of a playoff game.  I think having a real experienced veteran QB in those meetings and on the sideline would be a real benefit to JJM,  especially on game days when KOC needs to be focused elsewhere.
