Knee jerk offseason plan , no QB
#11
Nix and McCarthy should be available for us. Penix may have played himself into the top group of QBs with Williams, Maye, and Daniels. Penix's issues are injury history and age. He answered all other questions vs Texas. I would take him in a minute if he falls to us. And I think he may be able to start right away. Cannot say that for JJ McCarthy, but he is so young.

I don't think age is that big of a thing anymore.  They come into the league more mature and able to handle the bright lights better than maybe a younger guy that may have to sit a season or two.  But injuries are certainly a concern with Penix.

The consideration with age is the potential for further development and the question:  does he look so good because he is playing against kids 3, 4, and 5 years younger than him? But I do not disagree with you. Penix or Daniels' age would not be an issue for me. I am not entirely sold on Bo Nix. I would take McCarthy before Nix.

If we have the 12th pick and Penix is still on the board at 7 I would trade up and take him

A little early for me. This time two years ago, Matt Corral and Sam Howell were considered top 23 picks. By the time the draft rolled around, Matt Corral went in the 3rd round and Sam Howell went in the 5th.

As of today, I think Penix, Nix & McCarthy (if he declares) will be available for us. The question is does KOC like any of these 3 to run his offense.
You also have to consider if the value is there to draft them in our current position or can we trade down, add an additional pick & still get our guy. Or are we better served to draft another position of need w/ our 1st round pick & select a QB in the 2nd (possible Nix). Or if you want to take advantage of the 5th year option, trade up into the 1st round using our 2nd & additional draft picks. These kind of decisions is where a good GM makes his bones.
that mentality is how you end up with a Lewis Cine,  when Kyle Hamilton was sitting right there at your pick.   Screw that trading down crap,  if you think a guy is a stud, he fits a huge position of need for you,  and the value isnt off by much ( you obviously dont spend a first on a guy you have slated as a 3rd rounder)   you take him when you get the chance and dont think twice about it.  Only way I would come off Penix in the first would be if somebody were to get historically stupid,  I am talking first and second round picks for years.

Penix had 2 injuries to the same ACL and 2 shoulder injuries. Not quite sold on McCarthy or Nix.

McCarthy is the big question mark. He really isn't asked to do very much in Michigan's offense. As of now, he has a 2nd round grade. That could easily change if he has a big performance against Washington, and really shines at his Pro Day.

Exactly. He is getting hyped but there is not enough to showcase him. He will still be gone by our pick

At some point you need to take one. Just last year they passed on Will Levis who fell in to their laps. If they pass on any of the top ones this year then I think kam and Koc  will be gone before getting another shot at one. You can find warts on all these guys if you look hard enough.
