Play of his career

Can you hit a QB without the ball and he is defenseless? The runner was already past the line of scrimmage on an outside run. Goff was just watching it.

Youre wrong Jimmy. You can’t late hit the QB. In this case it was a very late hit.

Yep....you obviously can't do this.

I dont know how he was defenseless,  how many times do we QBs "sell" the play action fake by keeping their back to the LOS for a beat or two allowing the LBs to bite and then they turn and throw over top?  IMO its one of those grey area things,  you want to incorporate play action into your offense, then you should expect your QB to take some hits when he doesnt have the ball,  but Goff certainly had time to defend himself.  the ball carrier was at the LOS just as the hit was taking place.  That play right there would set up a naked reverse boot if the DE was caught chasing down the runner from the backside,  IMO its a risk of the play to have the QB like that as you know they have that naked backside boot in the game plan somewhere.

Well you can, and you can celebrate like you made a great play.  But there is the penalty

Every other player on D recognized the ball was being run.  But not this bright bulb.

He was playing from the backside and his job is to keep the play from getting outside.   And every player on his side of the ball didn't see it either or there wouldn't have been that huge gaping hole for the ball carrier to cut back into.  Either way,  sure the guy got duped,  but I dont see a flag there since it could have easily been a play action and he could see the handoff so he was playing his side.  Shouldnt have landed on the QB though.

Sorry Jimmy, but the guy is an idiot.  He was too busy celebrating to even realize the issue.

he was celebrating because he thought he sacked the QB,  he was fooled by the fake,  which is why it shouldnt have been a penatly.  kinda like when a receiver misses a pass but still takes a hit,   it was an expected outcome that he could have caught the ball so a hit shortly after the ball got there is within the rules,  a DE getting tricked by a fake where the QB keeps his body turned from the defender like he would on a play action pass.... IMO its no different.  dont want your QB hit, dont put them in situations where they could get hit.

for the record,  not arguing hes not an idiot,  he should have been looking for a fumble immediately after the hit instead of going into celebration mode,  but I still dont think it should be a penatly.

If you hit the WR a couple seconds after the pass, you will get a flag.  Or if you tackle WR X when WR Y gets the ball, you will get flag.  Or if the player gives himself up and you come in and blow him up, there will be a flag.  Just because you were fooled doesn't mean it shouldn't be flagged.  Get smarter.
