Mike Zimmer: Vikings are “top-heavy with finances,” depth is a concern“It’s concerning,” Zimmer said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “I feel really good about the top guys, and then some of these young guys got to come on. But when you’re kind of top-heavy with finances, that’s what you’ve got to do. Hopefully we’ll stay healthy, and try to get these younger guys better.”
Although Zimmer didn’t single out Kirk Cousins by name, the reality is Cousins is the reason the Vikings are “top-heavy with finances.” Cousins’ cap hit this season is $31 million, the second-highest of any player in the NFL behind only Russell Wilson. Other than Cousins, the Vikings aren’t particularly top-heavy.
But Cousins’ contract is the one the Vikings have saddled themselves with, and they’re either going to win or lose with Cousins this year. Zimmer may be laying the groundwork for a ready-made excuse if they lose more than they win.

First, congrats to O’Neill! Hope he earns every dime and plays well for us.
Second, an hour or so ago I was scrolling up twitter and I see a PFT tweet/article with Zimmer saying the Vikings roster is very top-heavy with salaries so depth could be an issue.
Then shortly after I hear O’Neill is extended.
Strange comment and timing by Zimmer. Maybe I’m reading too much into that but it just seemed weird that you’d say something like that to the media 30 mins before the team announces they locked up their best o-lineman with a huge new deal.
wonder when that quote was made?
It was sometime during his 10:30a press conference today. ONeill extension was announced by Vikings twitter right at noon.
Again I don’t want to read too much into it, but it struck me as odd. Coupled with all of his vaccine frustration type of comments the past couple of months, I do wonder if the Belichick approach of not saying anything at all has some merit. Clearly Zim doesn’t give a what haha, but we knew that. Sounds like he was asked about it specifically, so not really much to read into it IMO. Since Cronin quoted him, it was likely her that asked about it.

The top heavy contract resides w/ our resident Kook, goes by the name of Cousins…
Yep, I'm done with him. I hope he is gone. I'd rather trot Ponder out there then Kooky.

Oh god no....Ponder was brutal to watch.
FunkyDunkleman on youtube has a bunch of 10-15 min Vikings games. Plenty of great wins over the last 30 years. Rewatching the Ponder years, jesus, they are terrible

a waste of AP in his prime...They were the hopeless years with a bad D to boot.
As crazy as KC is, he's still the best QB here since Bert.

Ponder was so smart, and that wowed Rick. But he couldn't translate that into play on the field. It was like that uber brain locked up once the bullets started flying.

Intelligence is meaningless when it comes to playing QB. Moxie and poise trump it every time. Poise is what Ponder lacked. I always say this, but you could literally SEE the chaos in his head through his body language in the pocket.
