NFL insider drops bombshell report on Vikings’ Kirk Cousins
Quote: @Montana Tom said:
All this is pure speculation until we can understand what Kirk meant when he said that "structure is more important than dollars".  Does that mean that he wants a 3-year, no trade-clause, guaranteed contract?  How long does he plan on playing?  His kids are growing and his body has gotten beat to hell.  By his own admission, he's been financially blessed far beyond his wildest expectations.  He likes Minnesota to raise a family.  In my mind, a 2 or 3 year extension giving him options to do (fill in the blank), would allow us an opportunity to take a Bo Nix at 11, and at minimum sit Nix on the pine as he learns this offense and the team culture.  If Cousins falters in year 2 or year 3, we've created a more than capable backup.  There is nothing wrong with taking a page out of the Packer's playbook with the Favre to Rodgers to Love 3-year handoff.

This notion of $45 million for a minimum of 2 years is not based on any reality or demand...he said it...it's the structure, not the dollars and I don't think anyone on this board knows what that means.
We don't know the specifics, but I think we should probably believe Cousins when he says that term and guaranteed money are more important to him than whatever the AAV ends up being. Team probably wants 1. Kirk probably wants 3. Maybe they settle on 2.

What the Packers did was the ideal and, based on their attempts to move up last year, I'm convinced Kwesi knows this and would like to follow that model. Maybe not two years like Love got, but at least one, like Mahomes got. And at the end of one year, if the rookie looks good, Cousins is a tradable asset.

When a mediocrity like Daniel Jones gets 40 mil/yr it's hardly a stretch to think Kirk wants more than that.   I hear the argument here that he's so amazingly great but that he'll somehow play for a below market deal, which makes zero sense given his amazing greatness not to mention contract history, and what qb plays for a below market deal anyway?

Maybe one who's coming off an achilles injury? I don't think his age plays a big part in this, but I do think the injury keeps him just under market.

Maybe he realized that no other QB in history has been paid so much for accomplishing so little

Kind of like Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly...Would you be saying this about Cousins if he had been playing for the 49ers for the last 6 yrs.?

I think his market value had he not been hurt would have easily been in the 45 mil for 3 yr. fully guaranteed. With the situation now, I think 2 yrs. at 38-40ish mil is his market value knowing that his mobility/running was never a key component to his game. Could go a little higher if SF gets involved.

Why are you comparing Cousins to Hall-Of-Fame QBs that have played in Superbowls?

Spotrac, which does extensive research/comparison etc, has Kirk 3 years at about 40 mill per.   I want no part of the length or the amount per for a 36 year old coming of a torn achilles which can take over a year to get close to 90% if ever.

Sadly, the injury (Kirk's been an ironman for us) puts the handwriting on the wall (blinking red lights) for me to move on.  Decision will have to be made in March followed by the late April draft.

Spotrac also has Tannehill at 1yr for 5 million or Minshew at 2yr 10 million as a bridge veteran QB.

The Viking brass needs to fully vet this QB class and make a decision.  If Jaydan Daniels is the guy than go for it.  If they think we can get our guy at 11 then OK.  Bottom line we are in the have-to mode (sucks but time to earn the big bucks) of drafting an early QB because we have decided to not be proactive at the most important position.   Big boy bucks put on big boy pants and make a big boy decision Smile

of course they played most of their prime years in the pre salary cap NFL so there wasnt an issue of over spending on 1 player having a negative affect on the ability to build a quality roster around them.  3 decades later however you have to consider what you get for what you spend, and if a QB is needing a little more of a supporting cast to get the team over the hump,  well that has to come at the expense of somebody.   If other teams want to over spend on underperforming players... well good for them,  they should be easier to beat,   but the teams that dont do that (as often  or at high dollar positions ) will have a definite advantage.  I think if we had a quality OL, truly one of the top Olines in the league in front of Cousins,  we would have a top 3 O, and would likely be able to hang enough points up each week that we wouldnt be as concerned about all the deficiencies on defense... but that wont come cheap or fast, and with Cousins it would have to be both.

Without the injury, I think it would've been a helluva lot higher than that. There are 4 QBs over 50 and 8 over 45.
