Pat Mahomes...GOAT??
#1
The Chiefs lost yesterday and the national stories are all, "How could this happen???" Did everyone seriously believe that team was going to go 16-0? Did they forget who Andy Reid is??
And I keep hearing discussions about the topic in my title - whether Pat Mahomes is going to be the Greatest QB in the history of the NFL. And most of the discussions are arguing from an assumption that he will - in other words, "The burden of proof is on anyone who claims he might not be" - regarding a guy who has started for barely more than one season.
I realize it's a media hype machine at work, but...seriously, does no one else remember that there have been MANY wunkderkinds who get hurt, get figured out by NFL defenses, lose the weapons surrounding them, or just see their performance fall back?
Mahomes looks impressive playing but would you even mention anyone in the GOAT discussion before they have a few years in the league??

Well, he was down Hill and Hunt got booted last year, so he checks the losing weapons and still performs at a high level box...

That OL is a disaster. Of course there is hyperbole and hype but Mahomes has done amazing things. The talking heads love to choose the next anointed one and then hype that person to death. I love watching him play.

Not seriously. Too many things can happen. He's a remarkable talent, but there were many who thought Derek Carr was special before he wasn't. And let's not forget this: "I truly believe that Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever." --Ron Jaworski. Fans and media overreact about everything.

He has an amazing arm and can make crazy throws.  But they only scored 13 with all the highlight reels he put up.

He was hobbled somewhat by having his own lineman step on his ankle. But he is still developing his game.

He's an exciting player.  Favre-like in many ways.  Once he plays as many seasons as Brady with all the finger bling, then we will see.

Anyone thinking he is the GOAT after 22 games is insane.  With that train of thought Barkley must be the greatest running back of all time.  Seriously Tom Brady has played 274 games, is 6-2 in Super Bowls, has 3 league MVP's and 4 super bowl MVP awards and yet I still hear and can listen too arguments if hes the GOAT or Joe Montana is, but a kid that has had one good season even being considered the GOAT is nuts.

The NFL Hype Train is always ready to bring on a new passenger: in fact, the newer the better. Just ask Baker Mayfield. They had a seat next to the train conductor all set for him.....

Its actually simple from a media perspective: hyperbole sells. Hot takes. Quick and strong judgments. Need those non-hardcore fan clicks/viewership. Ratings and clickbait rule. If you want to have a real nauseating experience, watch a NFL pregame show anywhere: yelling, grab assing, ridiculous analysis, chuckle-headedness and the premise that these fuckers are having the BEST time just hanging out talking football, y'all!! Such contrived garbage.
