Declaring winners of the NFL’s free agency period is fool’s gold. The Jaguars were “offseason winners” for about a dozen consecutive years before it actually translated to success at a high level for them last season. You can’t win or lose any games in March, with that said, I really like what the Chicago Bears have done so far.
Two of the earliest deals announced in yesterday’s flurry of activity were the signings of former Jaguars receiver Allen Robinson and Eagles tight end Trey Burton who are both headed to Chicago. They were soon followed by Falcons receiver and speed specialist Taylor Gabriel, as well as Dolphins kicker Cody Parkey.
That’s a hell of a day for any team. It’s even bigger for a team coming off four consecutive last place finishes in the NFC North.
Yes they are. The Bears will have to do more than just put sexy names on paper to actually emerge out of the division’s cellar, but GM Ryan Pace is certainly giving new head coach Matt Nagy a lot to work with. These signings clearly make them better and will make life much better for second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
It’s still a big day for the Vikings as fans of the defending NFC North champions celebrate the dawn of the Kirk Cousins era. But the rival Bears in the Windy City are suddenly making moves that are very un-Bears like.
Combine these offensive pieces with a defense that performed pretty well last season and the Bears might actually have a chance to climb the ladder in the NFC North.
