The Miami Dolphins' decision to part ways with general manager Chris Grier reportedly won't yet lead to a head coaching change.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that Mike McDaniel "will remain Miami's head coach for the remainder of the season at least."
Dolphins managing general partner Stephen M. Ross said in a statement Friday he and Grier decided to "mutually part ways" after the team fell to 2-7 with a blowout home loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday.
McDaniel is in his fourth season as the Dolphins' head coach. The team holds a 30-30 record and is on track for second straight losing campaign under his watch.
Ross said in his statement that the decision to move on from Grier was made after he decided "change could not wait."
"We must improve — in 2025, 2026 and beyond — and it needs to start right now," Ross said.
Ross concluded that helping the Dolphins return to success would involve "evaluating all areas of our football operation, and moving forward with a clear vision for the future."
According to a report from ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques ahead of Week 9, "a team source said Ross' disappointment with the results doesn't mean he's in any rush to fire McDaniel."
"The source said Ross is patient and a believer in the process; there's a limit, but Ross will remain tolerant as long as there are clear steps toward improvement," Louis-Jacques wrote.
Bleacher Report
I think any GM coming in is going to want their own people in place, especially HC. But I give the Phins "some credit" for not standing pat.

The word down here in SoFlo is McDaniels hasn't lost the locker room...and Tua isn't liked by half the team. I think ownership MAY ride a bit longer with MM and a new QB in 2026 and see what they can do. Not sure how they do that with the contract he signed not long ago, but....possibly a real QB competition next summer.

makes sense to me to move off a GM before the end of the season. you can likely get a guy in house while the season is still running and give them time to start reviewing what works and what doesnt in order to make the changes at the end of the season and be at the head of the line instead of trying to play catchup.

I was a Dolphin fan in the late 60's living in Davie Florida. I wish I had just stuck with my original team.

Our in house would be...Grigson? That's the only guy I'd trust maybe less than Kwesi and certainly part of the problem. If the Wilfs retain Kwesi (which they will), at the very least they better send Grigson packing and bring in someone that actually knows what the hell they are doing to hold Kwesi's hand on draft day.

Andrew Miller enters his seventh season as chief operating officer of the Minnesota Vikings in 2025, being named to the position on Aug. 12, 2019.
Miller works alongside Vikings ownership and executive leadership in developing the organization's vision and the strategy for all business departments.
Under Miller's leadership, the Vikings business operations units have seen tremendous success. In 2024, the team and U.S. Bank Stadium earned the No. 1 spot for "Overall Gameday Satisfaction" in the NFL-wide "Voice of the Fan" survey, which measures Season Ticket Members' and game attendees' experience at all NFL games. The Vikings set an NFL record with the highest score the league had seen in the overall category and finished No. 1 or No. 2 in multiple areas, including "Game Entertainment" and "Gameday Staff."
Following the 2021 season, Miller played a key role as a member of the interview committee in the search for new football leadership, an extensive process that led to the hiring of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell.
It included virtual and in-person interviews with numerous candidates and significant background research before ownership and the committee landed on Adofo-Mensah, who was officially announced as general manager Jan. 26, 2022.
Miller then worked closely on the hiring process that led to the selection of O'Connell, who was named head coach on Feb. 16, 2022. Both Adofo-Mensah and O'Connell signed multi-year contract extension with the Vikings following the 2024 season.

No. No more "businessmen" that have no experience in scouting or personnel. The fact that he was a big part in the hiring of Kwesi certainly seals it for me.

no. not finding his replacement "in house" get a new guy into our house so he can review what he has to work with while the season is still going on.

If they can MM now there's a chance an interim coach could fire things up and win a few. The owner Ross probably figures keeping MM means losing for a better draft choice. He's the guy who fired Flores for refusing to tank so we know he's not opposed to the idea.

The reason to fire the GM now is you don't want that guy making any decisions on trades. You want someone who is looking to next year and beyond. Grier was going to be gone after the season anyway so he is happy to sacrifice the future for wins this year. I suspect Ross will fire MM after the season. But they are fine keeping MM and losing games this season.
