Cashman back @ practice
#1
Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since suffering a turf toe injury against the Jets about a month ago.

Cashman, who was the Vikings’ leading tackler through five games, had his practice reps limited during his first action with the team. Coach Kevin O’Connell said he hopes Cashman can ramp up his participation in preparation for returning to play Sunday at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Blake’s really confident and just absolutely dying to get back out there with the guys,” O’Connell said Wednesday. “Hopefully it’s this week, and we’ll see how he handles the workload.”

Cashman coming back would be huge, makes the entire defense consistently better.

Turf toe is a sprain of the ligaments and capsule in the big toe's metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. It's often caused by forcefully hyperextending the big toe, which can happen during many sports, especially those that involve frequent toe-offs, sudden direction changes, or physical contact.

Symptoms of turf toe include:
Pain on the bottom of the foot
Pain when lifting the big toe, standing on tiptoes, or pushing off

Risk factors for turf toe include:
Previous toe injuries
Arthritis of the big toe
Long first toe, flat feet, or other bony issues
Wearing shoes that are too flexible or tight at the toe box

To diagnose turf toe, a doctor will perform a physical exam and may order imaging scans. Treatment options include:
Resting and avoiding putting weight on the foot
Icing and elevating the foot
Taking over-the-counter pain medication
Physical therapy to improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles that support the MTP joint
Taping the big toe to the smaller toes to restrict motion
Wearing special shoe inserts or a particular type of shoe
Surgery to repair severe tears, fractures, or joint damage

Recovery time depends on the severity of the injury:
Grade 1: Usually heals in a few days to a week
Grade 2: Usually heals in a few weeks
Grade 3: Can take months to heal, and may require a cast for 6 or more weeks
