I think the defense will be bottom 1/3 still as well. Just not enough incoming talent to offset losses but like MB just said Bottom 1/3 > Bottom 2. Progress is progress. Without much money to spend and with our earliest defensive pick being a third rounder who doesn’t project to start, we are going to be far from stout.
I agree that our defense will be far from stout. If the defense can finish somewhere between, say, 15 and 20, I would be ecstatic. That kind of improvement on defense with what should be a pretty good offense, and this team could do a little better.

My only issue with your post is saying that Blackmon is our only addition. Don't forget, to the defense we trotted out last season, we're adding Cine, Booth, and Evans as well...not to mention Flores.

I don't mention Asamoah, Lowry, Davenport and Murphy because they're replacing quality players. Just as an aside, I'd say Murphy is an upgrade over Peterson, Davenport is a wash with Z, and Lowry a pretty significant downgrade from Tomlinson. Asamoah, hard to say. It would be pretty optimistic to think he'll be better than Kendricks. On the other hand, Kendricks was downright awful last year, so we'll see...

Biggest upgrade on D in my eyes is Flores...and an offense that can hopefully run the ball a little better.

Well if Flores has the dbs in the same zip code as the WR, it will be a marked improvement.

Yep. And some aggressiveness. Pleeeeassse. Don't sit back and watch the opposing offense just pick apart the D drive after f#$%ing drive.

I think the defense will be completely different under Flores. If he holds true with his past, our blitz rate will over double from about 15% in 2022 to about 35% in 2023. Ultra aggressive.

It will be a lot more fun to watch, with a lot more big plays for and against. But will it keep points off the board? That remains to be seen.

It should keep points off the board.....because nothing, and I mean nothing we did last year, kept points off the board. Will we give up some bigger scoring plays? Yep. But that aggressiveness will also turn INTO big plays for the D and keep points off the board. The opposing team scoring was inevitable, maybe it took a little longer but it was coming. And many times the points being given up came FAST.

The D was SO shitty schematically that I can't see any circumstance where Flores won't be more successful being aggressive.

Ranked 32nd under Donatell, an incompetent.  Coaching matters and the D will be better.  But it's still full of holes and question marks in terms of talent.

And I know fans slobber at the thought of being blitz-happy but blitz heavy teams with weak personnel get burned.  It's why Donatell played it so safe and soft, but took it so far it was almost like not playing defense at all.  The scheme of a moron. Whatever Flores does, it won't be that godawful dumb.

Berchich seems to think we will be going back to a 43 more this year,  or at least not a 34 near as much.   On KFan this morning.

without the right personnel it's reaction instead of attack action

I didn't mind the plan to switch to a 34,  but to force it when we didn't have the people for it was just plain dumb IMO,   if its something that KOC wants to work towards then they should have put much more emphasis on players to fit that style of D in the draft and FA the last couple years,  focusing on the DL and LB spots primarily.   Kendricks was never going to be a good 34 ILB,  and even Pete said that Hunter wasn't sold on being a stand up defender and it showed.  Not aggressive enough in his opinion,  commented on a few others that were mis cast.
