2021 Vikings Draft
#1
Which Viking player in the 2021 draft do you see being making a impact in 2022 season?
I like Darrisaw and Bynum.

You would hope one of our four 3rd round picks from last season (Mond, Surratt, Davis, and Patrick Jones) would do something. Darrisaw and Bynum should both be much better this season.

Bynum has super star written all over him, reminds me of Diggs a lot, has a great confidence and swagger to his game, is extremely athletic and is always in the right spot.  He is just what we need in the secondary.

Agreed. You've got to expect better out of your 3rd rounders than this but we'll see in their sophomore season.

Wont know unless you play them. Hopefully that changes this year

I was thrilled that we were able to get Darrisaw and I think he solidifies the LT position for us for a good while barring injury of course.  We seem to finally have a good/solid 4 or 5 year window of Tackle play after a decade plus.

Bynum was another late round find by Spelly based on analytics and projecting him to Safety.  Hopefully he can step up and be a solid starter for us for years.

It is a very good draft if you can find 2 very good starters for 5+ years!  Of course the jury is still out for days on all these players and last years draft as a whole.

Most folks say you need at least 3 years to evaluate a draft so if you go back to our 2019 draft:
  • Round 1, Pick #18 (#18 overall) - Garrett Bradbury, C, North Carolina State
  • Round 2, Pick #18 (#50 overall) - Irv Smith Jr., TE, Alabama
  • Round 3, Pick #17 (#81 overall) TRADED to Detroit Lions
  • Round 3, Pick #24 (#88 overall, from Detroit Lions) TRADED to Seattle Seahawks
  • Round 3, Pick #28 (#92 overall, from Seattle Seahawks) TRADED to New York Jets
  • Round 3, Pick #29 (#93 overall, from New York Jets) TRADED to Baltimore Ravens
  • Round 3, Pick #38 (#102 overall, from Baltimore Ravens) - Alexander Mattison, RB, Boise State
  • Round 4, Pick #12 (#114 overall, from Green Bay Packers via Seattle Seahawks) - Dru Samia, OL, Oklahoma
  • Round 4, Pick #18 (#120 overall) TRADED to Seattle Seahawks
  • Round 5, Pick #21 (#159 overall, from Seattle Seahawks) TRADED to New England Patriots
  • Round 5, Pick #24 (#162 overall, from New England Patriots) - Cameron Smith, LB, Southern Cal
  • Round 6, Pick #17 (#190 overall) - Armon Watts, DT, Arkansas
  • Round 6, Pick #18 (#191 overall, from Tennessee Titans via Baltimore Ravens) - Marcus Epps, DB, Wyoming
  • Round 6, Pick #20 (#193 overall, from Baltimore Ravens) - Oli Udoh, OT, Elon
  • Round 6, Pick #31 (#204 overall, from New England Patriots via Detroit Lions) TRADED to Seattle Seahawks
  • Round 6, Pick #36 (#209 overall) - Compensatory TRADED to Seattle Seahawks
  • Round 7, Pick #3 (#217 overall, from New York Jets) - Kris Boyd, CB, Texas
  • Round 7, Pick #25 (#239 overall, from Philadelphia Eagles via New England Patriots) - Dillon Mitchell, WR, Oregon
  • Round 7, Pick #33 (#247 overall) - Olabisi Johnson, WR, Colorado State
  • Round 7, Pick #36 (#250 overall) - Austin Cutting, LS, Air Force
2019 draft not shaking out so well as of now.  Bradbury is a below average starter, Irv Smith is still all potential/injuries, Mattison was a nice find in the 3rd.  Watts, Udoh, Boyd and Obi are all still on the roster.

But let's say Bradburry rebounds under new coaching/scheme and Irv lives up to his preseason hype every year and doesn't get injured then that has the making of a good draft...not great, maybe good.  As of now, it was a below average draft for sure.

It hurts a bit more when you miss on "higher" picks but at this point the 2021 draft class is being slept on.

- Darrisaw: Proved to be at least a league average starter as a rookie. There is obviously more upside there and the OTs are solidified long-term.

- Bynum: At worst he is a high-end backup with potential. More likely he will be the starting safety opposite of Smith.

- Nwangwu: Already a top 5 return man in the NFL, which has value.

- Ihmir Smith-Marsette: At worst is a WR 4/5 type.

If nobody else pans out, that is still a decent outcome. Getting 4 players locked into specific roles is a positive outcome.

12 picks and not a single league-average starter. Woof.
Mattison could maybe be one on different team, but he's not here so that doesn't count. And Irv backed up Rudy for 2 years then got hurt so can't count him either. Bradbury and Udoh sadly not league average.
So at least we got some contributors but far from the draft day you dream of. I did see you posted our 2020 draft in another thread and I agree that one is looking MUCH better with Jefferson as the prize but 3-4 other guys who are showing more potential than their 2019 or 2021 counterparts. Very pleased with how the 2020 draft has shaped up so far.
Goes without saying but hopefully KAM can hit big on some picks this week. It's a new era!

Yep - so far 2019 players entering 4th season - not good

2020 players entering 3rd year - good to excellent

I agree and think that is the exact reasoning on letting Xavier Woods leave.
