Interview A Formality?

I don't understand why you would assume that an interview is a formality. If you want the job, wouldn't you want to be prepared to answer questions? I also don't understand why he didn't want to address the Baalke situation. He could have presented his side of the story and if he learned anything from it. People get asked about their previous employers all the time. Maybe he needed some humble pie.
