QB Clayton Thorson, Northwestern
#1
What do you think of this kid? 6'4", 227 lbs. Nice arm. Good leader. He's pegged either late 1st thru early 3rd. I wonder if Minnesota is going to take a flyer on a QB in the first 4 rounds in next year's draft? Having a high quality young backup on the roster when Cousins contract comes up might be a good play. Sitting 2 years would be ideal for the right kid. Not sure what the team wants to do with Sloter.

Siemian's contract is up at the end of the year. I think the most likely thing is the Vikings promoting Sloter to #2 and drafting another developmental QB in the mid to late rounds.

Not sure if Thorson will go as early as the 3rd but if he is there in the 4th or anytime after I think it would be an excellent pick.  The Vikings need to draft a QB every year IMHO.
They have to continue to try to build depth at the position.  Doing it via the draft is not a bad idea at all.
Look at the Bengals who took McCarron in the 5th round.  There were rumors of the Browns willing to give up a 2nd or 3rd for him and the Bengals played hardball only to not get anything for him when he signed with the Bills who eventually traded him for a 5th.
The Patriots drafted Garappolo (in the 2nd) and Brissett (in the 3rd).
They traded Jimmy G to the 49ers for the 49ers 2nd round pick in the 2018 draft which is way higher than where they originally drafted Jimmy.
They then took that #43 pick and traded it to Detroit for #51 & #117.They traded #51 to the Bears for #105 and the Bears 2019 2nd round pick. They traded #105 to the Browns for #114 and #178.They traded #114 to the Lions for the Lions 2019 3rd round pick. They had traded their own #63 and #117 to Tampa for #56 to select Duke Dawson.
There final tally for Jimmy G was ...

Duke Dawson CB (partially due to using their own pick plus one from the Lions to move up)Christian Sam LB (on IR this year)An extra 2019 2nd (lower in the round most likely) and an extra 2019 3rd (higher in the round)
As we can see, drafting QBs could be a profitable business.
They traded Brissett for Phillip Dorsett who is very very fast and could be dangerous this weekend.
