The Minnesota Vikings are quietly exploring an exit strategy for 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, according to multiple league sources. That’s just one of several league-shaking rumors emerging from the Combine, where contract standoffs and planned spending sprees are setting the stage for a chaotic offseason.
The consensus opinion here at the Combine is that the Vikings are in the market for a new starting quarterback. In fact, a source tells me the team is really down on quarterback J.J. McCarthy and is ready to move on from their 2024 first-round pick. The team will bring in another signal caller to compete and eventually replace McCarthy, who was the 10th selection of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Speculation about McCarthy’s future with the organization has been rampant since the end of the season, his second disappointing year with the Vikings. After a rookie season spent on injured reserve, McCarthy played in just 10 games in 2025 after dealing with a high-ankle sprain and other ailments. He completed under 60% of his passes and threw 11 TDs and 12 interceptions.
To make matters worse, Bo Nix, who was selected just two picks after McCarthy, has had two successful seasons, culminating in leading the Broncos to the AFC title game this season.

This part of the year that is always just such a bore until FA actually opens is lying season. So obviously to sum things up: Minnesota can't be 'all in' on JJ's development AND ready to move on from him as we've seen both ends of the rumor spectrum and everything between. So somebody is lying for engagement. Happens every year. lol, I guess we'll have to wait to be sure who that is. But I'm wondering what might make more sense? You know, just that good ol' fashioned common sense thing we used to have.

Tony Pauline doesn't have a clue. I'm not saying this as a hater, but someone who has been paying attention to him for decades now, what he writes, as a guest on podcasts, etc. There was a time when he was solid, but he fell off the map in the new media and is trying to remain relevant.
At the same time, there's a report from Adam Schefter that says pretty much the opposite: "Minnesota [is looking] to find the right veteran quarterback to bring in to challenge JJ. McCarthy, yet not really threaten him.”

Exactly. Who you gonna believe on these scoops? Tony Pauline or Schefty? One is ultra-connected and the other... hasn't been relevant for a long time.

Tom P. and Dianna R. also echoed that the team is all in on JJ and his development as a starter for Minnesota. But 'Matt Coller' said the team is looking for a new starter, lol. Always something out there to validate someone's narrative....I mean there is a Flat Earth Society.

IMO...when the new season starts, JJ will be the starter. Regardless of all the media drama.

Cover all the bases, get support and competition in place. IF KOC and JJM prove that it works, that would be awesome
