The only thing I can think of is protecting themselves with a viable option if McCarthy is further behind in his recovery than expected, but all indications are that's not the case, so I'm right there with you in not seeing the strategy here. I think despite any reports it's a looong shot he ends up back in Minnesota. 

Which brings up the point, if Darnold is gone, where does that leave our QB room? I think the preference and the reason for signing Dimes is this very scenario, but if he is also gone, who are we looking at that would be a good fit here and do we add a quarterback in the draft like a Will Howard? I think ideally you'd want McCarthy starting, a veteran backup behind him, and a rookie draft pick marinating as your 3rd.

Ugh, I hate Will Howard as a NFL QB who just had a horrible Combine showing: he's SO limited physically. I'd take a swing at Kyle McCord late in the Draft for developmental. If Darnold is gone, I'm sure Dimes is option #1 for Minnesota but that might not be vice versa true for Dimes.
