Yep. I don't follow the nba that close, but this seems to happen quite often. I suppose it gives the team the ability to go BPA and then more time to work the terms of a trade with a team that covets that player?

I hate that term as usually the only time you hear it right after the draft.... sure there are lots of guys that are under drafted in every sport every year, but how often do you really see a true head scratcher where a player had high value before the draft (who steals anything of no value?) and ended up falling like a rock and still turned in a great career?

So experts cant say stupid things? the guys havent done a thing, how can they be a steal until they prove their value? and if they werent really valued high prior to the draft then is it really a steal to get them where they went? how often do players really fall from where they were projected and then turn out to be great players?

uhm... yes it is... a player is highly valued and gets taken highly, they have a pedigree or other to get them put up that high... now if one of those guys fell to the late first or second round and ends up being a monster after all... that would be a SOD, but for a player of limited value pre draft to get taken later in the draft as expected... well is that really a steal? IMO its just not overpaying, and if that late rounder ends up being a great player, well thats just finding great value, but still not what I would call a "steal" as there was really no assigned value before the selection and the player has had a chance to show his worth.
imagine you grabbed an original piece of art at a local gallery for $50 before the artist became famous, after a few years he/she really blows up in the art world and your painting is now worth $50,000.... did you steal it? I wouldnt say so, now if you found $50,000 painting at a garage sale for $50 and the owner had no clue of its true value.. well that IMO could be considered stealing....
I think its just a dumb term the way its used considering these SODs have not shown to have any more value than they were taken at what ever draft position... which outside of the lottery picks in the NBA... rarely have a ton of value in terms of league currency.

Scalping came to mind in relation to picking a player and then trading him away immediately. I think it makes a lot of sense to take advantage of other teams who are willing to give up something valuable for a player you took. In the NBA, there isn't a lot of expecation for these guys right away. Unless you are a stud high school player, it's generally assumed these players will need work. That's the polar opposite of football, unless a player is specifically labeled a project they are expected to generate the hype to sell tickets. You trade away an NBA drafted player and the reaction is kinda , "damn, well its not like he would have contributed much right away anyway," but you trade away an NFL player like that and the reaction would be more like, "that guy was a 1st round pick with a TON of skill what the **** are we thinking?!"
