Schefter: Teams are going to ask the Vikings about JJ McCarthy

Teams don't win and don't win consistently without a top 8 QB.  We seem to have that with Darnold right now.  This decision might be different if JJ hadn't missed most the entire regular season with the knee injury.  Coaches would have seen him more in practice during the season and would have a better gauge on his on the field progression.  I think they know he has the leadership traits, mental side, etc but we had a few months of OTAs, training camp, and 2 preseason games to see him against love bullets.  It doesn't mean he won't be our starter if we keep Sam next year.  It just gives us a good option short-term until JJ beats out Sam (or doesn't) for the starting spot.

People have dumb opinions, nothing you can do about that.  Lol

Honestly, I'm happy with our QB situation right now and I'm sure the Vikings are too.  We have a high end veteran we rehabilitated and is playing some good football.  We have the option to keep him around for at least one more season AND we have a great human being who also happens to be a talented QB prospect just waiting to show he's "the guy".

We are in the rare spot of potentially having two franchise level QBs and one is on a rookie deal.  This is what we've wanted forever as fans...  A good starter and a young guy backing him up who is a talented kid that can develop at his own pace and be the guy to take over when he's ready.  I don't get why anyone would be upset about that.

I don't either, but folks these days seem to get off on the fight. Even when there really isn't anything to fight about.

What seems so bizarro to me is that on the morning of March 13th, 2024, the Vikings QB room consisted of Nick Mullens. Today in our QB room, we have a 27-year-old Pro Bowl QB with franchise arm talent and tools, a 21-year-old QB with franchise arm talent at tools and another 27-year-old QB who bounced us from the playoffs two years ago...and Nick Mullens. Take a bow if you had any of that on your bingo card for 2024.

Safest bet in the world is as soon as Sam has a bad game...

Maybe this is the way it is for all teams, or maybe just teams who dont have elite QB's...Seems like QB has been contentious among Viking fans for years.

I recall it getting particularly heated with Culpepper.

I agree with Cowherd more often than I disagree with him, but I think he's wrong here. I think the Vikings brought in Jones more as the backup for JJ next year, not Sam.

Sure, things may have changed since then, but the Vikings signed Jones two weeks after Sam's worst game against the Jags and about a week before he really caught fire. Second, Cowherd doesn't even mention the money difference, which is going to be a factor. Third, while I agree with Cowherd that the Vikings should not just let Sam walk out the door, there are several other options, including one where we keep them both by signing Sam long-term and waiting a year or two to decide which one to trade. Fourth, if the Vikings took a 2nd, 4th and 5th for JJ McCarthy (like CC suggests), I'd personally drive to Eagan and strangle Kwesi myself.

Undoubtedly KOC has earned a hefty pay raise.  There is no need to do it now.  Just let the focus be on the team and the season and the Wilfs and his agent will have plenty of time after the season ends to work it out.

The other aspect of this, I'm sure KOC's agent is advising to wait because if the Vikings get to or win the Super Bowl, that extension goes up a few more million.  And KOC seems like the type of guy that doesn't want to distract from the team with his own contract extension.

Like Montana Tom said a few posts prior, this is the media drumming up "controversy" where there isn't any for clicks.

my comment was a bit tongue in cheek,  I really dont give a shit when they pay him,  they are going to pay him and I hope its the biggest contract ever given to a coach... I was more talking about the timing of the suggested new deal.   Wink
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?
