When being a gambler pays off everyone thinks you're a genius, and when it doesn't they think you're an idiot.  Campbell had a hot streak earlier this year and now he's cold.

I know the spreadsheet geeks are clamoring for every HC to just yolo it all day long but speaking as a gambler, the losing streaks can be hell.  I don't think a coach who just gambles every week can be successful over time.

The analytics are based on large samples but 17 games a year is not a large sample and variance is a bitch who won't help you find another job after she gets you fired.

This is a really good post, totally agree. The young analytics crowd go crazy over the 4th Down King because it aligns with their theories and also job justification. But as you mention, the negative side can be hell and cost games. The fake punt was obvious and so f-ing stupid. Campbell has been smelling his own farts for too long and I think his ego got in the way. Green Bay should not have been able to win that game as easily as they did with the amount of injuries they had. You have to get pressure on Goff or he'll pick you apart. If I see a 3-man pass rush against Goff when Minnesota plays them, I'm going to lose my shit.

Exactly. I wish I had a dollar for every time fans bitch about a decision to punt instead of going for it on 4th down. Fans are stupid. Campbell coaches like a fan.
