a profeser asked  some  student from china to only speak english while in class or on campus. she is getting blasted  what is so wrong about  people  having to speak the english language in a american university . all this pc crap needs to end

Context matters. I don't think it's appropriate to send an email telling students what language they can speak in the student study and lounge areas. These students were having private conversations. It was not her business to interfere. If anything that was a way to alienate and intimidate the students. It was disrespectful and unprofessional. Some of these were first year students, I think it sends a terrible message and leaves a horrible impression.

I don't have a problem with announcing in class that while in this class you must speak in the laugage generally understood. Anything beyond that I would have a problem with. None of her business what language a group of Chinese or any other nationalities speak in a study group on campus.

Howz about this context? 
The prof proclaimed to have the "utmost respect" for the international students. 
The prof was relaying what others (including the Dept Chair) had related to her.

Effective communication is "key" in medicine, right? ... and if you have students who ignore the best advice to effectively communicate with EACH OTHER during medical training... shouldn't the prof (rightly) ponder if the students will effectively communicate with patients, upon graduation?

Also... she claims that they're being downright loud.  Rude.  

Whatevs.  What would any biostatistician at Duke medical school, know?
