Zimmer and Spielman's Contracts
#1
I only see two options right now. Let them play out the last year of their contracts as Lame Ducks and see if they can get this thing turned around or you fire both of them now and start over.

Extending their contracts to me would be a major mistake but it's not my money. I don't think we are just a few quality offensive lineman away from being a contender so if we decided to start over, I wouldn't have a problem with it but I don't trust Mark or Zygi to find the right GM and hire the right Coach either.

Instead of starting over, I would let Stefanski install his own offense and sink some significant resources via the draft and free agency into the OLine. I would also remove defensive playcalling from Zimmer so he can focus on the entire team. Sacrifices will need to be made on the defense so we can shift a good chunk of the cap space to the offensive side of the ball. Passing on Hernandez in the draft with a stationary pocket QB in Cousins was a major mistake in hindsight. The level of OLine talent in the draft is just not there so we will be challenged to fix this line in one offseason.

I just don't have confidence that Zimmer can overcome all of these challenges but I'm willing to give both of them the last year of their contract to sink or swim.

They'll get 2019. Should they is the question.

I guess that depends on your perspective. If all you care about is fielding competitive teams and filling seats than they definitely deserve their last year. If you only care about winning championships, then I would have to say No on that one.

I just thought I heard "With the 18th pick in the 2019 NFL draft the Vikings select DB..........."

Sign me up for one more year of Zimmer.  I like him.  I think many here are forgetting how absolutely shitty this team was prior to him coming.  Zimmer would get another offer within hours of being fired.

Predictable statement for the day after. What are they going to say? Until you see both of them with a contract extension beyond 2019 they are just words. I think they get the last year of their deal to prove themselves.

Sure he would - to be a DC somewhere. Not a head coach.
I understand the fear some have of losing Zimmer: we might get another Leslie Frazier. But that comes from one core issue: you don't trust our GM to find a true winning coach. Zimmer is the best Spielman has been able to hire, and it seems we won't have to endure a 3-13 season with Zimmer here; he'll keep us around .500, can challenge for the division crown when the NFCN is weak.

Keeping Zimmer is a form of playing not to lose - which seems to be his approach for each game, as well.
