NFL lands 37 of top 50 rated television shows of 2017

NFL lands 37 of top 50 rated television shows of 2017, proves demise has been greatly exaggerated

Remember all those thought pieces about how the NFL is losing its grip on America? Ratings are down! People hate players kneeling! It's all Colin Kaepernick's fault! The ratings are so bad that Papa John had to step in and blame the NFL for falling pizza sales. The league will never recover. Those NFL boycotts are working . . . or none of that is happening and the NFL is still the rule of American entertainment.
The NFL owns 13 of the top 20 and 37 of the top 50 most watched programs of 2017. So ratings are down for the NFL, but ratings are down for everything. The NFL still gives advertisers and partners the best and widest access to customers and viewers.
Live programming played in 2015, 2016, and 2017. It will play in 2018. It's what grabs viewers and forces them to watch because they can't delay it. They can't record it and not have it ruined. They can't have social media slow down and ignore it. The NFL is still the best sports product on television. It's the best thing for advertisers. It's the most watched piece of content. The problem about pointing to the NFL's ratings decline - and it is declining - is that it doesn't seem that bad in comparison to everything else. Everything is declining.

Football, by the numbersAll told, the NFL put its stamp on 13 of this year's top 20 broadcasts, and while most of those slots were commandeered by postseason games, two of the biggest draws were regular-season matchups. With an average delivery of 26.9 million viewers and a 15.2 household rating, CBS's coverage of the Dec. 17 Patriots-Steelers nail-biter now stands as the 15th most-watched, highest-rated program of 2017, while Fox's presentation of the Sept. 17 Cowboys-Broncos blowout (Denver demolished Dallas by a 42-17 margin) ranks 19th with 26 million viewers and a 14.3 rating.

NBC says 'Sunday Night Football' was TV's most-watched program in 2017With the NFL deciding that there won’t be a “Sunday Night Football” game for the final week of the regular season, the 12th season of “SNF” on NBC has concluded.
The network sent out a release on Thursday touting its ratings as well as its ratings dominance over the competition in primetime.
According to NBC, Nielsen Company data shows “Sunday Night Football” is on pace to finish as the number one primetime television show in all key metrics for the seventh straight year, a record; previously, it was tied with “American Idol” for most consecutive years atop the ratings chart at six.
Numbers have been kept since 1950.

Even with ratings decline, NFL owned all of TV in 2017Beyond football, what Nielsen’s Top 50 list demonstrates is the power of live broadcasts. Not a single pre-recorded program cracked the entire top 50, with awards shows, presidential addresses, the World Series, the NBA Finals, and the college football and basketball playoffs making up the remainder of the non-NFL top 50 list.

The NFL’s television presence is truly a half-full/half-empty scenario. It’s indisputable that ratings are down for the NFL from 2015 highs; ratings are down from 2016 levels by an average of eight percent. Opponents of the NFL’s protests this season proclaim  that disgust with the league’s social stances is the prime, or even only, reason for the decline, but the numbers don’t necessarily bear that out. Ratings for all primetime programs are down 9 percent, suggesting that while politics surely plays some role in viewers’ decisions to turn away from the NFL, kneeling isn’t as responsible for the ratings decline as changing viewing habits.

Not necessarily disputing anything here, just pointing out that those NFL games in the top 13 are all from last January and February. While that wasn’t before Kap started taking a knee, it was before the huge(?) backlash from the fans during the first part of this season.

Less people are watching TV in a traditional way and that trend will continue. The Redzone channel has absolutely impacted football watching, along with streaming video sites amongst the coveted 18-34 year old demographic. That age group wants to watch the game they want, not being forced to watch whatever game is being shown locally. They won't support it. Ala carte viewing options is coming and the next TV contract is going to look VERY different than what is going on now.

The NFL is still a powerhouse for viewing, but ALL the top 20 shows on network TV ratings are down. Doesn't have a damn thing to do with the kneel down protests.

I hear ya. But they're also the national playoff games so they should be expected to rank higher than the others. Note that the NE/PIT regular season game from week 15 ranked # 15. Also in the top 50 are Sunday night football games from week 2, week 13, etc. Regular Sunday games are well represented for both regional and national broadcasts. The Thanksgiving day games are there, too.

In other words, Game of Thrones wasn't airing Sunday nights during the season to bite into the NFL ratings.  Joking...  sort of  Smile
