Birdies releasing Kirko...
#1
Confirmed today:
==========================

Confirming previous reports, the Atlanta Falcons announced on Tuesday they will release Kirk Cousins.

Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham told reporters that after discussions with Cousins and Cousins' agent, the club will release the veteran quarterback on the first day of the new league year on March 11.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Feb. 7 that Cousins was expected to be released before the start of the new league year.

Making the move after the start of the league year, which Cunningham said the Falcons will do, allows the team to designate Cousins as a post-June 1 release if they choose to do so.

A post-June 1 designation would allow the Falcons to spread out his $35 million dead cap hit over the next two seasons, with $22.5 million going on their books in 2026. They will only save $2.1 million against the cap this year in that scenario, but they would lose $10.4 million in cap space if he were to be released prior to June 1.

Cousins and the Falcons restructured his contract in January to guarantee him $67.9 million in 2027 if he were to remain on the roster on March 13. The move did not impact any of the guaranteed money he was already owed.

When Cousins' release becomes official, he will join a very interesting crop of free-agent quarterbacks this offseason. Aaron Rodgers, Malik Willis, Daniel Jones and Russell Wilson are among the other notable names who will be available.

The group could also expand to include Kyler Murray and/or Tua Tagovailoa depending on whether or not their current teams decide to move in a different direction and can't find a trade partner.

Cousins, who will turn 38 on Aug. 19, started eight games for the Falcons in 2025. He threw for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in 10 total appearances last season.

No no no no no no no no no before anyone suggests we bring him back. Done with that mediocre experiment. Maybe for the league min.

He was top 2 in both yards and TDs when his knee went, and he set records with JJ.

The "mediocrity" was more commonly with an interior o-line that was consistently awful (sound familiar?) and a defense that was rated in the 30s for 3 of those seasons.

If he can accept a likely back role/salary, he already knows the system and many of the players...so...what's the problem?
KOC, JJM, Flores...make a good plan, or you'll be following Kwesi....

Am I crazy about the idea? No. But compared to last year it would be less of a trainwreck.

There is no problem. He's definitely someone who should be in the running, and likely near the top. People hate this or that idea "because he hasn't won a Super Bowl" or "we already tried that" or "he's too old" or "he doesn't fit our offense" or "he doesn't fit our culture."

To that I say, all QBs in your 20s who've won a Super Bowl, haven't played for us before, and who fit our offense and culture, please take one step forward.

Last year he would have been the ideal fit for the backup in terms of what we were looking for. However, I think it is a much different situation this year, I think we are looking at someone who can compete for the starting job. If JJM does not turn out to be the guy for us this year, I think it is another year .500 year of football if we have to depend on Kirk starting. Think he would be great to fill in for a game or two, but not more than that.

He is a good conservative counterbalance to KOC's reckless yolo instincts.  Together they won 13 games.  Flores is here to pick up the pieces on D.  It will get the Wilfs their coveted 1st round playoff appearance.  They'll be able to deal JJM away for a bag of peanuts now that the it's-all-Kwesi's-fault narrative is in place, ride with Kirko for a year or two, and draft another kid from what is allegedly a stocked 2027 draft class.

What's not to like? Wink
