Letting him walk is the right thing to do. I mentioned this over four months ago and still believe it to be so. Tagging him is not only risky, causes many other financial gymnastics to be made to sign needed players and also a bad PR move. If they can’t sign him to be the QB (which I am not a fan of) then letting him walk is the right option.
