with those things you say, there is a whistle to stop play, there was no whistle here to tell the defender the play was over. The QB was moving with his arms up at this chest ( like QBs are supposed to do to protect the ball as they are dropping back ) which also concealed the ball/no ball to the defender. He was not defenseless as his attempt to fake the defense made him still an active participant in the play, he was in no way giving himself up, sorry, IMO if the QB is running play action he needs to be considered live until he has either made it very clear that he is not part of the play, or the whistle blows. That defender did his job based on what he could see, we are really only talking about 2 seconds from the snap until the was hitting the QB, so it was pretty bang bang.@JimmyinSD said:
If you hit the WR a couple seconds after the pass, you will get a flag. Or if you tackle WR X when WR Y gets the ball, you will get flag. Or if the player gives himself up and you come in and blow him up, there will be a flag. Just because you were fooled doesn't mean it shouldn't be flagged. Get smarter.@greediron said:
Sorry Jimmy, but the guy is an idiot. He was too busy celebrating to even realize the issue. he was celebrating because he thought he sacked the QB, he was fooled by the fake, which is why it shouldnt have been a penatly. kinda like when a receiver misses a pass but still takes a hit, it was an expected outcome that he could have caught the ball so a hit shortly after the ball got there is within the rules, a DE getting tricked by a fake where the QB keeps his body turned from the defender like he would on a play action pass.... IMO its no different. dont want your QB hit, dont put them in situations where they could get hit.
for the record, not arguing hes not an idiot, he should have been looking for a fumble immediately after the hit instead of going into celebration mode, but I still dont think it should be a penatly.
