WR and DB have been mocked to us quite a bit - might be great value there.
But boy, do we need IDL...

mocks rarely go by value, they look at the fact that we let AT go, and PP walk, and assume that must be the biggest area of need so they go the easy route and slap the position in as our pick. I would say any defensive position would be a huge need, but IDL and LB seem to be the biggest... but honestly, if there is anything at all to work with in Hooker or another QB not in the top 4, they need to take a swing and get one in house, if not then trade back and get more day 2 picks.
To be honest I think we have so many holes that whatever positions
they pick I’ll probably be fine with it and there’s likely going to be several
positions of need that we can’t satisfactorily fill. But that said, I would like to get back to
having a very strong OL-DL. There’s just
so many advantages to being able to get pressure with just your front 4-5.

Outside of Jalen Carter, Masi Smith has been building momentum since his Pro Day. He's a 319lb Beast who would be an excellent Interior Disruptor. Kancey and Bresee are also options in the first. Kancey is too small IMO but would be an excellent Pass Rusher, and Bresee has similar injury concerns like his old Teammate Booth Jr. Tomlin has met with Smith twice and the hot rumor is he wants to take him at 17 so there is a good chance he won't get to 23. Ika and Benton are Day 2 guys. There is way more first round depth at Edge this year.

I would expect that Kancey and Bresee will be there at our pick. I am ready for an inside pressure guy, it's been years since we have had an effective one. Sheriff? Tom Johnson?

There are a lot of people who want to compare Kancey to Aaron Donald since they are similar in size and he could be a good 3T in a 4-3 scheme, but I have concerns about his Scheme fit with the defense that Flores runs. Bresee has impressive athleticism for a 300lb lineman and ran a 4.92 forty at the combine. The question is can he stay healthy? The only reason he is not higher up a lot Team's boards is the injury concerns. He struggles to stay on the field and as we saw last year with Booth Jr. it needs to be a big part of the decision if you are going to take that risk with a first round pick.

As a Michigan fan and someone who lives near Mazi's hometown, I have a love/hate reaction to his game. Since HS he has been a beast. Tremendous weight room work ethic, and all the physical tools to be a dominant player. Also very intelligent kid. Still, took 3 yrs. at Michigan to finally get noticed on a team that struggled to find an identity in the middle of a suspect D-line. Even in his last year not as completely dominant as he could have been given his physical attributes.
He will be stout, but hasn't pushed, or collapsed the line on a consistent basis. I'd be fine taking him at the top part of rd. 2, but so far the tape hasn't matched his workouts. Maybe an NFL D-line coach can get him to the next level.

Wide range of opinions it seems on Smith. Some love him while others, much like yourself, just didn't think the on-field production matched up with his supposed talent. I concur though, he's probably a second-round pick. I think when all is said and done Jalen Carter will be the only interior defensive lineman drafted in the 1st round. It's a down year but I think you can find some scheme specific players that can come in and be productive on day two of the draft.

Right now, if we don't sign anyone else, I'd put CB, ILB, WR and OLB as bigger needs than DL. Davenport is on a one-year deal and I doubt we get Z back, so that just screams edge in the 1st to me. It's a much bigger impact position than 3-4 DL.
If we sign Shelley, I think you can push CB down a little too. And considering we've shown interest in OBJ and Hardman, I expect us to fill the WR need in free agency before the draft. LOVE the ILBs in the 25 to 40 range.
