  OT: Tough Guys
Posted by: MaroonBells - 04-04-2025, 10:01 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (25)

Spent 6 hours in Urgent Care yesterday with my son after he was checked hard under the ribs in a lacrosse game.

When the injury occurred his coach told him to “man up” and get back in there. And of course he did. There was never any doubt about that. The kid would walk through fire to keep playing. He’s been pissing blood ever since.

Urgent care sent us to a trauma center, which is where he spent the night, lying in a bed with what they described as “potentially life threatening” bleeding of the liver. Surgery was only ruled out this morning.

It’s no longer life threatening. He’ll be going home this afternoon. But he’s out for the season.

Hey, if you’re a coach and one of your kids gets hurt, take them out of the fucking game and save the “man up” bullshit for your fake-tough online profile.

  26 year old rookie QB?
Posted by: StickierBuns - 04-04-2025, 07:31 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (3)

That's what Tyler Shough will be a week or two into the start of the season. Played for 3 college programs. Good size, good athlete and nice arm. Not great mobility or poise in the pocket. Not a ton of production. Seems like a nice kid. Lots of injuries for basically 3 years of his college career. Media is propping this kid up, but not sure what kind of prospect he is. Thoughts?

Can you believe U.S. Bank Stadium will be 9 years old already?

Crazy. That whole deal worked like a charm with the pull tabs. Paid off what, 20 years early?

(This was from a 2023 article)

"This year's tax bill allowed for nearly $400 million in reserves to be used to pay the debt.

"That allowed for the state to pay off the construction bonds that were used for the construction of U.S. Bank Stadium," said Katie Topinka, intergovernmental relations director for the city of Minneapolis.

It was a combination of state dollars and contributions from the city of Minneapolis: $366 million in reserve funds, and $12 million for the general fund paid off the debt and remaining interest.

There are savings in the early payoff. According to the Minnesota Department of Management and Budget, retiring the debt saves taxpayers some $226 million in interest payments.

The new tax law also caps the city's share towards the upkeep of the stadium to 3% of the hospitality taxes, which means more savings over time for Minneapolis taxpayers.

"The initial savings on the construction bonds and that new change in the tax law, we estimate that the debt relief for Minneapolis taxpayers will be about $350 million between now and 2046," Topinka said.

Money from pull tabs helped pay off this debt. Now that money – $150 million a year – will flow into the state's general fund, where it can be used for a number of state projects."

The Vikings will welcome players back for their first day of the voluntary offseason program April 21 at TCO Performance Center in Eagan.

That’s just three days before the NFL draft begins on April 24 in Green Bay, Wis.

Their rookie minicamp for those players drafted or signed as undrafted free agents has not yet been scheduled. It will either be May 2-5 or May 9-12.

Vikings organized team activities (OTAs) will take place May 27-28, May 30, June 2-3, June 5 and June 16-18.

Mandatory minicamp will be June 10-12.

The nine-week offseason program is divided into three phases:

The first allows for only meetings, strength and conditioning, and rehabilitation work.

The second begins on-field work, excluding live contact or full offense-vs.-defense team drills.

Finally, OTAs — limited to 10 practice days over four weeks — allow for full team practices, though live contact is still not permitted. Teams can run 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Returning players are only required to participate in the three-day minicamp; they face fines if they don’t. Skipping other parts of OTAs is often frowned upon, though.

Part 2 of How to Mess Up Your Rookie QB

@ProFootballTalk
"Josh McDaniels: New offense will be an adjustment for Drake Maye, but not a big deal."

This doesn't help a 2nd year QB....at all. Spent his whole rookie year learning an offense and now he'll need to learn a completely new one. Hey Josh, its a deal for sure, how big that is remains to be seen. Why do teams continue to do this? Is it the worse thing in the world? Of course not. But its a hinderance to making a substantial step forward in Year 2.

OT: So long to provincialism and the good ole days...

Williams Arena is approaching its 100th birthday, but the historic Gophers basketball venue could be getting a new name.

The Gophers announced Thursday that they are working with Independent Sports & Entertainment (ISE) to secure potential naming rights for the building that’s been known as Williams Arena for 75 years.

As the home of Gophers men’s and women’s basketball, it’s also affectionately known as “the Barn.” But with college sports going through major change, funneling money to athletes through name, image and likeness (NIL) payments, athletic departments everywhere are looking for ways to raise money.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for a company to align themselves with the University of Minnesota and with Gopher Athletics,” U athletic director Mark Coyle said in the news release. “We look forward to working with ISE to find a naming rights partner that will help us continue to provide world-class experiences for our student-athletes.”

When the Barn opened in 1928, it was originally called the University of Minnesota Field House. It was renamed Williams Arena in 1950 to honor former Gophers football coach Dr. Henry Williams. He’s a college football Hall of Famer, but as the athletic department has noted, he didn’t have a connection with Gophers basketball.

The university hired a company two years ago to evaluate Williams Arena for possible renovation. But the landscape has already changed drastically with NIL payments for players and an expected ruling this spring that will allow schools to pay athletes about $20.5 million each year in revenue sharing.

Those rapid changes caused the Gophers to table Williams renovation discussions. Instead, they are looking into creative ways to generate more money to help in recruiting.
