It is preseason and the Vikings are playing uninspired football.

1. Devonta Freeman is now the NFL's highest-paid running back after agreeing to a five-year, $41.25 million contract extension with $22 million in guarantees, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. His newfound status is fleeting, though. The Pittsburgh Steelers' Le'Veon Bell has yet to sign his franchise tag. 
   As soon as Bell signs, his $12.12 million price tag will make him the league's top-paid back. 
   A disconnect exists between these two points. 
   

Michael Floyd insists he doesn’t feel he has to make a good impression with the Vikings on Thursday. But it wouldn’t hurt.
The 27-year-old receiver from St. Paul signed with his home-state team in May, a month after players had reported for offseason drills, and it has taken time for him to get up to speed with the offense. With Minnesota opening its preseason schedule at 6 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo, he finally feels comfortable.

Mackensie Alexander’s debut in the nickel
Alexander played only 68 snaps as a rookie, but in 2017 he’ll be asked to play what’s effectively become a starting position in the NFL. According to ESPN Stats and Information, opponents had at least three wide receivers on the field 69.8 percent of the time against the Vikings last year.

Mike Zimmer wasn’t being hyperbolic when he said Tuesday that the Minnesota Vikings defense is so far along they could have played a game last week.

The Mr. Mankato competition does not end with the Minnesota Vikings hitting the field for an actual (kinda) game on Thursday night. In fact, it’s only just begun. Preseason games are the biggest stage for our inexperienced competitors to make their mark. So as the Vikings head to Buffalo to play preseason Game 1, which contenders made a strong first impression and which still have a ways to go?
*(If you’re not familiar with Mr. Mankato, to qualify the player must be either inexperienced – a la a practice squad player from last year – or a recent draft pick past the third round)
