VikeFans Interview - Matt Vensel - StarTribune

Matt is joining the Viking media coverage after spending time in a similar role in Baltimore covering the Ravens.  It will be nice to get the perspective of a reporter who has seen a championship team built in Baltimore, and can track our progress agains that goal.

Matt knows his football, and this is a very informative interview that both provides new information and a little bit deeper dive into some recently reported news on the Vikes.

I am looking forward to Matt's coverage of the mini-camp and it will be nice to finally get a glimpse of what Barr, Crichton, and Yankey can do. I definitely agree that Patterson's value as a receiver definitely takes priority over the return game. He can be a game changer in the return game, but he's flashed enough ability to make me believe that he can have a bigger impact as a receiver. If Patterson's return role is reduced this year, then would McKinnon be expected to pick up the slack or who would be the other returners that the Vikings may turn to?

Tom, love the radio voice! I've got a similar one, I get asked a lot if I do radio….I tell them there's not enough money in it, lol.

Good stuff. A lot of excitement building and anticipation for this team. Nice of Matt to stop by and give some insight. I think Minnesota's 'interest' in Williams was cursory, just like their 'interest' in Flowers.

Very interesting interview. :purplethumbs:

Nice interview.  Lots of good info, not much to disagree with.

About the backup RBs tho, just don't get it with Asiata.  He was soooo limited last year. I don't see why they are keeping that plodder.  Cheap, special teams player, decent size.  But he is a FB trying to play RB and not very good at it IMO.

You and me both.   Asiata was underwhelming but for the Philly game.   And, on Jerome Felton, with more 2 TE offense, more 3 and 4 receiver sets, and Jerick McKinnon to get the ball too, it makes you wonder if you have the luxury to keep the highest paid fullback in the NFL, when he might get 10 snaps per game.

nobody is talking about Zach Line.  Is he still with the team?  I think he should be able to beat out Asiata.

Zach Line is with the team, but listed as a FB.  The problem with Line is that he is pretty slow (4.7 in the 40), but he has a nice wiggle that makes him have faster football speed.  I am confident he is better than Asiata, but is out of place at FB.  He never played the role in college.  But, if he can learn to block, he is a much cheaper salary than Felton, and he is a fantastic pass catcher out of the backfield.

That is why I think he is better than Asiata.  Asiata looks slow and has less lateral movement than I do.  Line wasn't much of a FB last year, but shoot, if we don't use the FB, and he can play the 3rd down back, keep Line and dump Felton and Asiata.

Thank you for taking the time to join us here Matt, I really enjoyed your take on the QB situation.  I hope they sit Teddy B and let him learn.  I really hope AD does better than expected in the passing game, I would not be surprised if the new coaching staff is able to coach him up to it.

Good stuff. I would like to know about Simpson and Wright - anyone on the bubble?

Didn't AP prefer running behind Felton?

Great interview and lots of good thoughts from Matt. I'm not familiar with his work but I'll be sure to follow his reporting as we get into camp.

Is he on twitter?

Excellent. Followed. Thanks, PP.

Thank you for taking the time to do the interview for us, Matt.

This was a VERY insightful interview.  I did not realize that Turner has such a history with 2TE sets.

Another great interview! Love hearing about Zimmer coaching up the secondary. There is a ton of young talent back there. With Zim' s influence, I would not be surprised to see a drastic turnaround in the back 4.

Matt, welcome to Minnesota...we'll all assume you have plenty of purple in your wardrobe already...

Great interview. Hope to hear more from you Matt, and will definitely be following you on twitter.

Good stuff so far will listen to the rest later tonight if it storms out.

Thanks for your time Matt.
