I'm not sure how JJM went for some from 'developmental' to opening day starter? Hype indeed, fodder for the 24/7 sports machine.

I love some JJM hype, but starting from Day 1 is something I just can't see.

I'm hearing more and more people say that JJ will start week one. I think it's nonsense.

1. This is a complex offense. Not just the plays, but the footwork, the eyes, the drops. There's a lot to learn. Took 10-year veteran Cousins 9 months to fully grasp it. Darnold has a 6 week head start.

2. JJ isn't just a rookie. He's a young rookie. Just turned 21 years old. The youngest QBs to start an NFL game were Alex Smith, Drew Bledsoe and Tommy Maddox...and the youngest to start a season opener? Sam Darnold. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of starting a QB early.

3. KOC has wanted a young toolsy QB to mold his whole career. Everyone said the Vikings were the best place a QB could go, largely because of KOC. His reputation as a coach and developer of QBs is going to ride on how McCarthy turns out. He's going to take his time with this one.
