#394343 NOTICE GIVEN: WARNING

Posted by 96POPS on 27 September 2015 - 04:13 PM

To all teams on the Viking schedule.
Have your backup QB ready to play!!
The starter may start and play the whole game, BUT
he will know he's been in a dog fight by the end of the game. He will be hit, maybe not sacked a lot but he will definitely feel it the next day.

#419911 Let's Agree on this - We Hate the Packers!

Posted by BradJohnson on 21 November 2015 - 07:46 AM

When I was in Minnesota, I was the starting QB against Green Bay 3 times.  I watched Warren Moon beat them in the Metrodome with the help of a great running day by Robert Smith in 1996.   But, my first start was late that year, and we dropped that game in Lambeau.

The next year, I was the full time starter, as Warren moved on to Seattle.   We fell down by 24 points (31-7) but I had a 28 yard QB sneak on those infamous fast wheels I had, and we fought furiously to pull within 6 points ( threw 3 TDs that day), but still lost in the end at that cow pasture known as Lambeau Field.  If I hear "go Pack go" anytime in the next 25 years, it will be far too soon!

My only other start was a Monday night affair where I had developed nerve damage in my throwing shoulder and could barely feel the ball.  It was the Packers and Monday night, so I tried to go, but I was hurting the team.  It was the last time I would start a Viking/Packer game, as the next season (1998) I broke my ankle against St Louis, and was pretty much lost for the season.

However, I got a chance to see a magical performance led by Randall Cunningham and Randy Moss on a rainy Green Bay night, and then my teammates stomped the Pack again in Minnesota on our way to a 15-1 regular season record.

I may not have played in either of those games, but nothing felt better than to beat the Packer and watch their fans hang their cheese heads in shame.

i went on to play for Washington, Tampa Bay and Dallas in my career, returning for a second tour of duty with the Vikings in 2005.   I was fortunate enough to be the QB for the Vikes to a win in 2005 in Green Bay - nothing felt better!.

In all my travels, and all the so-called travels in my NFL career. I wanted to beat no team like the Packers, and while it did not happen often for me, when it did, it was like wining the Super Bowl.

So, tomorrow at TCF, know that there is one old Viking who still bleeds purple and hopes we stomp Green Bay!

Go Vikes!

#408842 Some Personal Good News

Posted by GeorgiaVike on 02 November 2015 - 09:50 PM

As most of you know, I'm not one to get into personal business on this board... However, I did share, in a thread, a few months back about my mother being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Just thought I would give an update.

My mother informed us tonight that she has beat cancer "thus far". They think they have it completely removed after chemo, radiation and surgery. There are no signs of cancer at the present moment. She has been undergoing some major treatment the past few months and at one point I was told to book a ticket to Phoenix, because she was hours from death.

Well, thanks to the power of prayer, modern medicine and one bad ass chick, she is officially cancer free at the moment.

To those of you who sent prayers and support... I greatly appreciate it. I can't imagine anyone being closer to the brink than her situation. It's absolutely amazing!!! To anyone who is dealing with a family member or friend battling this, I understand your pain.

From now on, I am a pink wearing SOB when it comes to anything cancer research related.

SKOL every one of you!!!!!

#570866 Behind the lens. What I learned today.

Posted by GeorgiaVike on 11 December 2016 - 11:00 PM

Pardon my grammar and punctuation.... it's been a long day, but thought I would share.

I'll start this off by saying...as most of you know, I'm just a knucklehead Vikings fan. I came to this site a few years ago looking for a place to get Vikings information, without having to read through the continuous garbage the mainstream media puts out there.

After a few years of getting to know certain people on the board, I was afforded the opportunity to hold a camera for today's Jaguars game. Let me tell you, it was the probably the most informative, excellent time I have ever had watching a football game, in my life. There are so many things that I've seen on TV over the years, that have made me think that this was an exclusive club for reporters, players and access to teams... and only the entitled could get inside the action. I WAS DEAD WRONG!!!!

The people who paid for the "VIP experience" and had the most expensive suites in the joint, didn't have the access we had today. They were kept behind ropes and escorted off the field when their "time" was up.

Within seconds of entering the stadium today, I was on the elevator with Mike Wobschall from Vikings.com and getting information that is not being reported by anybody. He was actually a very cool guy. I always thought he was some nerdy guy who fell into a job with the Vikings. Not the case, he's as smart as they come and doesn't come off at all like he does in his interviews on the site. Stand-up guy.

As I was getting my bearings straight in the press box and finding my allotted position, there were a couple of other media members that called Tom on over, just to give him crap. Not at all like I imagined these people to be after reading their articles. They were very kind and treated me like part of the "family" as well. However, I did meet some people today (I won't mention names) that I used to think were pretty good at their job. Two of them were Twin Cities media (2 different stations) and seated next to Tom. While Tom had no idea who they were, I did. They were basically helping each other give the same canned answers for their stories and not paying attention to the game. One wasn't even watching it and was texting the entire time. It was rather irritating when I saw the lack of attention and overhearing their conversation. One of them did not even go on the field before the game to talk to players... and the other (as I saw first hand) was just asking another media member for information while on the field (not really working hard, just going through the motions).

Tom was giving me the rundown of do's and don'ts... we'll get to a "don't" in a minute  :D. Making this knucklehead comfortable with an unknown situation. It was awesome. I didn't worry about a thing while I was there... beyond the "mystery meat" they were serving in the press box... BTW, what was that Tom?

We decided to go down to the field before the game and get a lay of the land. On the way down to the field, we got crossed up looking for the runway/tunnel door that led to the field. As we ask a member of security where we got off course. We turn around and start walking back to the correct route, Mike Zimmer is walking up to the same security guy and asking the same question. LMFAO! We tell Zimmer to follow us and start asking him about his eye. Very nice guy and yeah, still intimidating.

We reach the field and start BS'ing with the security on the field to see where we can or cannot be. They were all really nice people and let us have complete walk of the sidelines (please and thank you still go a long way in life). We walked around the field and Captain Munnerlyn was nice enough to talk with us as he was getting into his "zone" pregame. we continue to walk to a couple more feet and Paul Allen shouts over "TOM!" and air high fives Tom Moore.

As players are warming up on the field, I am a mere 2 feet from them as they're catching passes and stretching out. They didn't give two shits that I could possibly be in their way. They kept doing their thing and preparing for the game. At one point, the assistant D-line coach came over to Tom and had a conversation with him. Mind you, he and Tom had never met. He was doing the practice drill when the defenders are basically sparring with him. Nice guy, down to earth and had zero idea who we were or which organization we were with. It was genuine. He started talking about his personal life, because he and Tom both being from Texas could relate on a few things.

We hung out on field for a bit before the game, before heading back up to the press box. I have to admit, the press box life would probably get boring after a few seasons of doing this, but there are some really good characters there. However, there are also those types who are there just to think they are awesome and recycle the same garbage everybody else is throwing out there.

Watching the game up there is sweet. I wasn't watching the game as a fanatic. I was actually looking at certain plays and formations, which players were getting open, who would be a good interview, etc... It's hard to pay attention to who's in, who's out, when you are looking at so many aspects of the game. I finally understand why a coach says he'll have to go back and look at the tape to see what happened during the game. There's just way too much to keep track of.

During halftime I went down to have a smoke. As I was sitting outside of the stadium, Pete Bercich showed up. He was taking a quick breather before their halftime analysis started. He was as nice as could be. We BS'd for a minute and he had to get back to the booth.

Fast forward to the 4th quarter. There's about 5 minutes left of the game and we head down to the field level. At this point, we're not sure who's going to win. We stop into the press conference room to drop off our bags and watch a few minutes of the game. Let me tell you, if you have never been in a press conference area (or at least Jacksonville's), this room was small. 12 plastic chairs and 5 cameras. The room was probably 14'x16' in size.

After dumping our additional stuff, we head to the field with a video camera. Since all of the locker rooms are on one side of the field, we are standing just outside of the Vikings tunnel on the Jaguars sideline. The game is obviously turning in our favor and you could see the true defeat in the eyes of the Jaguar players. I know this season has SUCKED for us fans, but lets not forget that Jacksonville was pegged to be a decent team this year. Even when I lifted my cell phone to take a pic of the stadium, players on the bench were putting towels over their heads, so I couldn't capture their disappointment. It was the true definition of "the agony of defeat".

The game ends and the Vikings win. I turn on the camera to get video of the Vikings coming into the tunnel. Tom stops Alex Boone and asks him if he would be willing to give us a minute (the don't I was referring to earlier). He obliges and we get an interview right on the spot. Total score. He's a champ in my eyes for doing that.

After the interview I go up the runway outside the locker room door and take video of players exiting the field. There was one player who came off screaming in excitement and gave me a Ric Flair WOOOOOOOO, in the camera (I hope Tom puts that video up for a "Who is this segment"). Very cool.

From there it's off to wait in the hall for locker room access for interviews. The wait isn't very long, maybe a minute or 2. When you walk in, It's hard to believe how small this area is. Honestly, my high school locker room was bigger. You see guys who are busted up, bleeding and hanging around, it was weird to me. I was waiting for the primadonna attitude from some of them. The strange part was, I didn't see any of that from a single player on this Vikings squad.

We were notified that 1 on 1 interviews probably wouldn't be happening, with a 95% certainty. Well... We were able to get to Adam Thielen first. After Tom started to interview him, we were front and center of a media mob. The vultures had moved in on our interview. If you don't believe me, watch the interview Tom posted on the site.... Then go and check out the Thielen interview on the other sites. Our interview video is from beginning to end.

We then went to other players, who ended up being very accommodating. They were kind and shook our hands. My favorite interview was actually with Nick Easton. He got his first start and you could tell that he wasn't used to the NFL interview. I think he was shocked we wanted to talk to him. Great kid and had great manners.

We get done with interviews and realize that we actually got (6) 1 on 1 interviews from the players. That's pretty awesome, considering we were told with 95% certainty that we wouldn't get 1.  :D

We head across the hall to the canned press conference room. I'm front and center of Sam Bradford as he's giving his press conference. Literally, I'm arms length from the podium. He's getting another round of "canned" questions and giving the "canned" answers. Tom asks him a question where he can give his team praise and Sam lights up and smiles for the first time. It's almost as if he was saying "Thank you Tom...." LOL! It was excellent.

So today I got to shake hands with Ziggy and Mark Wilf, Rick Spielman, Mike Zimmer and countless players and media.

After that, it was watching Tom cut up film. While waiting waaaaaay to long for a beer (no, I'm serious), and just talking football. Great time.

I will add. There were more Vikings fans there today than Jaguars fans. The chants at the end of the game were awesome. When I was leaving the hotel this morning, the lobby was packed full of Vikings jerseys.

Here's my "They are who we thought they were" pic...  :P

press_conference.jpg

Thank you Tom.... and thank you everyone here at VikeFans. It was an absolute honor and blast today. Would love to do it again.

#563616 Parent brag thread, BTW, THANK GOD WE WON!!!

Posted by 96POPS on 20 November 2016 - 03:47 PM

DH, had a great game when we needed him to today.
Just to brag a little on my son. 10 years he's been playing with the Vikings. #1, I'm very proud of him being able to make it that long.
He only had 1 sack today and almost had a second, nonetheless, his 1 sack puts him at #6 all time in sacks for the Minnesota Vikings. That's since they started keeping sacks in 1982.
Many may ask "what about the PPEs. Well according to the Minnesota Vikings all time records, they went back and counted the PPEs defensive statistics and Eller, Page and Marshall all had enough sacks to put them in the top 5. With those being film review they are all three in the top 5 all time.
Add those to the equation and Brian is at the #10 all time in Viking history. Not too bad. I'm very proud of what he has accomplished in his NFL career.

We got word today from our friends at Winter Park that VikeFans.com will be granted full media credentials for a week of training camp, the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, both home preseason games, and even for the preseason road game at Dallas.

We have worked closely with the Vikings over the last 3 years to develop a trusted relationship with them. They have been nothing but gracious and helpful with every request we have had.

This is just one more LARGE step in our evolution to cover the team. Next step? The new stadium in 2016!

You may sometimes say, "I remember VikeFans.com when...", but our day has arrived and we are committed to make the fan base proud with out coverage of the team.

Thanks to the Minnesota Vikings for all their support!

#223847 Hey, I am the Record Holder!

Posted by BradJohnson on 28 October 2014 - 05:13 AM

Saw the stats of NFL QB's first four NFL starts that you guys published yesterday.   Looks like I am finally number one in a category with the most passing yards of the group in those first 4 games.  If you could just stop the analysis here, I am golden!

I also took the facts you had in the graph and shared it with my NFLPA reps -  they assured me that I was due no cash bonus as a result of my accomplishment in those initial starts!

Take it from a guy who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, I was so glad to see the Vikes pull out the win on Sunday.  Keep up the optimism - a playoff contending team is just around the corner in Minnesota, and it starts with a sound defense.

#574572 We saw the oncologist today~

Posted by azvikesgal on 21 December 2016 - 06:37 PM

We sat for over an hour until Dr. Gonzalez finally saw us.  He opened with "I'm not convinced you have bone cancer."

:NoWay:

Jaws dropped and questions and answers flew about the room.  We grabbed as many as we could!!!

The biggest 'opinion' piece was my "Dr. ******* said we shouldn't seek an oncologist."  Dr. G's reply 'that's just how urologists are.  Shoot first ask questions later.'

Anywho~he doesn't trust bone scans as they don't concentrate and give a clear picture of metastatic bone cancer.  He has ordered a bone survey that we will be having in a few weeks.  We can go through the holiday season not really knowing, but definitely not as fearful as we were two hours ago!!!

I went from thinking that I would be a widower in 6 months to seeing my future with my husband again!!!

Now granted..............he still may have the bone cancer, but even if he does, this doctor gave hope beyond the 1 year life expectancy.  And right now................I'll take every ounce of hope I can get.

Thanks all for the prayers..............there might just be something to that eh?!

May you all have a VERY merry Christmas!!!  And a safe, healthy, happy new year!!!

#542754 I'll eat my crow 96POPS

Posted by 96POPS on 30 September 2016 - 10:44 PM

So last year and the year before I was somewhat vocal here on how I felt Brian played and to be honest I really thought he was washed up. So after the last few games and then watching this from coach Patterson today I realize I was way wrong! Sorry I doubted Brian, he is a leader and a playmaker! With that being said POPS is what Coach Patterson said in this video Brians feelings also? Did Patterson rejuvenate Brians career? What are your thoughts? And again I will eat crow..

http://www.vikings.c...7f-2aae53771d52

DUDEE, don't sweat it. It's taken a while but you came around. Lol
Seriously though, the previous coaching staffs did not take advantage of his athleticism when he was younger. This staff came in with a vast amount more knowledge on schemes and how to use their personnel. Honestly, i don't know what it has been that has happened with other staffs, including college. I guess it's just the mentality of Brian. He was taught at an early age that he was part of a team and for that team to win you do your job first and depend on others to do their job. The end result is a team win. For fear of being pulled he always did his job to the best of his ability. It was hard for him early in his career and honestly i think for a while it soured him. He was told to keep the QB in the pocket and don't let him escape his side. He was told just to tie up blockers and do not rush. He was told to go inside and some other things that he new wouldn't work but he did these things because the coaches knew he would do whatever he was told to do. I had my gripes with him and i know at times it hurt him a lot because i wanted him to show what he could do, show his athleticism, show his power and strength, show his unbelievable quickness off the ball. He would explain to me why he was slow off the ball sometimes. Because he was the base end, first he had to read run or pass then he had to transition into a pass rush. Their were a lot of times this occurred. So much so that he got so fed up with the previous DC that he went after him (DC) in one game. If not for JA and KWill who restrained him, we might never have been having this conversation.
It dates back to college. In 2007 at the combine he blew away everybody with his showing. He was interviewed by Charles Davis after his day at the combine and Davis asked him,"why his athleticism that was shown today didn't carry over onto the football field." Without hesitation Brian replied,"the scheme we played and my job within that scheme at Texas did not allow me to." For instance, his soph. Year at Texas he played, the Quick End. He rotated to whichever side of the ball that was the open side, much like the RDE in the NFL is. Basically the rush end. The problem with that is that in their scheme, at the time, his job was to tie up blockers and allow the LBs to make the plays. Just so you know, the LB behind him most of the time was Derrick Johnson. During spring ball that year the coaches came to him and asked if he would move to the power end, because they knew how strong Brian was and they thought he would be better suited to take on the double teams. He moved and in his JR year he led the DLine in TFLs, tackles and led the team in sacks.
I still say he always should have been an OLB or the RDE or rush end but, it is what it is. Go back and look at his combine 40 time. Pay close attention to the 10yd split 1.49 sec. He found out the next year that this was the combine record for DLinemen. Actually he ran a 1.487 they rounded up to a 1.49. The next best 10yd split that year at the combine was Gaines Adams at a 1.59. A full.10 in just 10yds.
Ok look what i did, i got on my soap box and rambled. Sorry everyone

Yes i am very proud of him. I know and always knew what he was and is capable of.
Why some coaches never took advantage of what he could do, i don't know. I could tell more stories but i won't because i would be here all night. I know many of you saw what happened on the "other" forum and how i defended him and argued. There are some here that were there and later said the same thing you're saying to me now. So i just say don't sweat it DUDEE, because I'm happy that you finally saw it.
With a good year this year he will have quietly moved himself into the top 5 in sacks in Vikings history. Many may forget that he also tied the record with Doleman for most sacks in his rookie debut, but i haven't. Being a former Cowgirl fan i honestly hope that when he retires that he will have completed what he was drafted for and that was to bring a SB ring to the Vikings and fans. As he honestly believes you fans deserve it for being so loyal. And for me, I'll be able to tell some friends to stick it in their asses with the Cowgirls SB rings. Lol
Again, I'm sorry for making y'all wade through my long response to DUDEE. I'll try and answer the rest of your questions. Yes this coaching staff has rejuvenated Brian. The fire within him has never gone out it's just burning a bit brighter now with the help of some coaches that believe in his abilities and savvy. I am so glad for them. I know there are a lot of people out there who still think he should be replaced as a starter but, I'm not one of them. I hope that what little time he has left in his career that he can do enough to one day he will be considered for induction into the Vikings ring of honor, but sadly for me will his stat sheet warrant that honor. Probably not.
But if nothing more then maybe he can be remembered by the Viking fans as one of the hardest working players to have put on the Viking uniform and a team player willing to do whatever is asked of him to help his team win. If the result is to bring a SB ring to the Viking fans, then he did his job.
Sorry again for the novel and while running my mouth i realize i probably wrote some stuff that need not be said and maybe shouldn't have written but I'm too damn tired to go back and take it out. So I'll just apologize for my ramblings.

As many have responded to my new wife and Mines loss, I just want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you here.

It has meant the world to me, and my wife was stunned reading all the support. She would wonder who all you are as she saw me online posting and reading all things Vikings. It amazed her!

All I can say is thank you so much for your support. Its amazing that people i have never met can be so compassionate.

Please, no responses. I just wanted to say thank you. Everything that has been said by everyone really has made a difference to me and my new wife.

#124643 major changes make me feel very confident

Posted by 96POPS on 07 April 2014 - 08:21 AM

There have been major changes to everything at WP. From a new strength and conditioning program and diet to the outlook and vision as to where this team is going.
The vets love the change and make no mistake about folks, I have the confidence to say the attitude there is not accepting anything less than a SB victory.
I know it's just April and I may have purple glasses but this is REAL change from the past 7 years

#507225 Parent brag post (ignore at your will)

Posted by pumpf on 04 July 2016 - 03:56 PM

I'm not real comfortable "bragging" about anything other than myself ( )... but here goes:

My daughter's 12-under softball team just won the Nebraska state championship yesterday.  Ours is just a city rec. team (cost $50 to be on the team), from a town of 1700.  Our team beat select teams from all over the state- some of which charge $500)+ to be part of their team.  Although my daughter is just a role player, she has had some timely defensive catches (outfielder) and hits along the way.  On Saturday, she was never retired (either got a hit, got hit, or walked).  She's worked her way up from being a bench player to a bona fide starter- and a darn good pitcher (although not as good as the starter, who really carried us to the championship, shutting out the other team in the final).  Plus she's a straight A student, usually gets the lead roles in the musicals she in involved with... and loves other people (it broke her heart last winter, when we went to DC and she saw her very first homeless person).  Her team finished the season with 1 loss.

Meanwhile, my straight A son, who is also an excellent pianist... finished the regular season leading his baseball team in hits, batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, stolen bases, runs scored and RBIs.  We enter the league playoffs this week, having lost only 1 game... to a team that only has one loss (to us, earlier in the season).

I could go on (my wife is pretty awesome, too)... but, if you've read this much, I'm sure it's been enough.

I am very blessed to have such a talented, loving and hard-working family.  (Obviously, they take after their mother)

#382631 Train Wreck Threads on VikeFans.com

Posted by Tom Moore on 05 September 2015 - 08:00 AM

Well, as I type this, the train wreck thread of the month has 7,600 views - bigger than all we have except the eye-candy thread and the Rick Spielman interview.

The reality is, for whatever reason, our site loves a train-wreck where people really dig-into people and call them:

* Liars

* BS-ers with no connections

* Fuck-tards (hey, I've seen it)

And worse.   It is always started by someone who wants to derail an original conversation in the name of them "knowing more than anyone else".  Then, when that person is challenged about their opposing position, it just gets uglier and uglier.

Invariably, the person who is hurling the accusations resorts to call people "idiots", "Fucking idiots", etc.   In the most recent case, the argument is who has the best NFL connections.   Here is the reality, there are people on this board who have connections with NFL people - they just do.   NFL Draft Guru has them.  How do I know?  I have helped him with some of his projects, and he does not work as hard as he does to try to be some big-wig on our site.   He knows NFL GMs and he knows player agents, and this is where he gets most of his information.

I'm going to be specific on this one, and I apologize if someone wants it a secret.  There are a few on this board who think NFLDG came here from PT to try to get embedded and then once he was, he was going to embarrass us somehow in the name of regaining the glory for PT.   NFLDG has been here for 2 years, has done in-depth interviews with us, and has created copious analysis to share with fans.  For those "who know" that he has ulterior motives, you're right.  He wants to work in the NFL.  But, to think he invests two years of his time for some vendetta against VikeFans in the name of PT is just idiotic - and I don't care what someone PM'd you who USED to be a MOD.  It is just an asinine take.  If you don't like his takes that's fine, but think about whether you'd say such ugly things at a party where he was at live with you.   Have some courtesy in life.

As for OBM, as I stated earlier, I just don't know him well enough to know his connections, but if he says he has them, then he probably does.  Pumpf has some connections in the NFL (I know he does), but he does not brag about them.   It is not out of the realm of reality that someone makes connections with NFL players, coaches or front office types.   I knew no one with the VIking 2.5 years ago.  But, as of today, we have interviewed 122 former Vikings, 59 Vikings who were on the current roster between last year and this year, and we know most of the front office.   So, connections really do get made.  Those are not look-a-likes in those interviews we post.

As for the comment of "chosen ones" on the VikeFans.com board.  This comment is made by a few, who say, "there are certain 'golden children' on the board who get to do and say whatever they want to do.   Well, guess what?  We have MODS who work for free whose job it is to make sure that does not happen.  They have NO connection to Mike Olson or me.   The MODS work independently, and Mike, who used to be a MOD, quit that role so he could remove himself from that tough job and would not be biased.  I have NEVER been a MOD here or anywhere else, because I don't want that job.  Ask AzVikesGal how tough and thankless that job is.

Usually, the person claiming the "golden child" unfair treatment is a person who wants a larger voice and the membership base is not interested in their comments.  What does it take to be involved in creating site content and our direction?  Just volunteer.  We have often begged for help, and get very little.  Much of what we do get is inconsistent.  Mike does almost 100% of the site upgrade work and makes many of the decisions to improve the site.  He does it because he cares about the membership base and wants us to grow and be a site Viking fans want to come to.

Who provides content for our site?   Very few, although some have tried, and we have some new things coming soon that will hopefully change that.  My point is, if you want to be a voice, volunteer to do something.  Name calling and acting like you are smarter than everyone else, without actually getting involved is pretty gutless.

Mike and I do get benefits, such as going to training camp, and covering Viking games live.  Why is that?   I hate to say it any other way, but we worked hard, invested our own time and money in the site and earned it. We work HARD at camp and at the games to bring you info you might otherwise never see.   We don't get paid, we have no advertising here (although we could easily gain quite a bit)

We have built so much in the last 2 1/2 years, and the vast majority is good here.  But, some get in a mood occasionally to say "look at me!  I'm important, so notice me".  And they follow it up by insulting others.  I know I enjoy my social friends who say negative things about me!    Don't buy the bait and engage with personalities that you wouldn't engage with in real life.  Imagine your life if some of the stuff in these threads were said when you are face to face with them.  We lose so many social graces in an anonymous internet chat room.  It is why Mike and I changed our online monickers from SomewhatAwesome and Purple Pain to our real names - accountability.  Does not mean others need to do the same, but I doubt some would be a bold in a negative fashion if people really knew who they were.  We have many who get pissed, leave the board, and them come back with another name - about 2 days later.  Seems silly, "I am leaving now, so look at me - you won't have me, the only voice of reason to kick around any more"  Only to return as another anonymous voice a few days later.

As for me, I cut way back on the content I provide to the site over the offseason.  Why?

* I feared my voice was too prevalent, and I want this to be a fan-site, not any one person's site, and certainly no site for non-existent VikeFans.com "golden children"

* It became too hard to create content that ended up less interesting for conversation than Obama, religion, the Adrian Peterson debate, who has better NFL contacts, etc.   It is human nature that if you work on something and no one is interested, you stop creating it.  I currently handle interviews, some original stories, and Twitter.  It's a full-time job.  I interact less on the board, because my voice is not needed.  Others do a  great job keeping the dialogue moving with interesting topics.

* The site has become pretty self-sustaining in the offseason, with some key people who keep dialogue going, so it was less critical to feed original content in the offseason.

Again, folks, I apologize for the long post, but it does get old when there is a small handful who feel compelled to drive the conversation in a negative direction and get personal with their comments.   It serves no purpose with a new Viking season upon us and with a team talented enough to give us actual optimism for our performance on the field.

If you are not happy here - leave.    Don't try to convince others how unhappy they are.  They are grown adults, they can evaluate and make their own decisions.

About once a month, we get a thread talking about how we are becoming Purple Thoughts (PT).  We aren't.   We aren't becoming KFAN's Rube Chat either (which has an even uglier tone with fans calling each other names).   PT is where most of us started, so be thankful it existed, as it gave us a chance to start our own community.  It DID get out of control on their chat board.  There WERE golden children who could do and say anything they wanted and get preferential treatment.  They are a paid site, either by subscription or advertising.   We are not them, we don't have MODs who want to build a base of power.  Mike and I don't want to build a base of power.

So, let's talk 2015 Viking football, not how many fewer people in the NFL you might think a poster knows.   And remember, often, if you have an inside source, you CANNOT share specifics of what you know in advance, or you will not longer have the inside source. So, quit saying "well, if you know something, tell us, or if you don't, you are full of shit and know nothing".  Ever known a secret that you could not tell someone?  It is the same thing.  You'd' be stunned at the things Mike and I have learned that we never even whisper here - you can't.  It does not work that way.

#304610 OT: Pretty emotional weekend.

Posted by 96POPS on 30 March 2015 - 07:14 AM

This past Saturday, i am happy to announce, my daughter was married to Stephen Fields. The ceremony and party afterwards was held at our home. We all had a great time and the previous 4-5 months of work on the house, yard, and preparations was well worth the day.
I didn't think it would have been as hard as it was to take that step of giving my daughter away but it was. Yes, i cried like a tittybaby. And needless to say that i was unable to join in many festivities of the long party afterwards.....thanks to the Fireball but from what i understand everyone had a great time. Congrats to my daughter, Misty and our newest addition to the family Stephen Fields.
And yesterday was another great day as we went and bought over 60 lbs of crawfish and went to Brian's house for another great day with all of the family. This weekend was awesome for me and i hope you all had a great weekend.
BTW, Misty was absolutely gorgeous on he special day!!!

#444348 I Better Hear More Trash Talk between now and Sunday Noon

Posted by BradJohnson on 09 January 2016 - 11:08 AM

I'm sitting here in Georgia, really looking forward to seeing the Vikings shock the world by beating the favored Seahawks outside at TCF Bank Stadium.

I suited-up for 5 playoff games with the Vikings, and was the starter for the 1996 game in Dallas.  But, I never played in that kind of cold.  But, when I was with Tampa, no one gave us a shot to win.  I was a "game manager" and we were "nothing special".   The result of that was a Super Bowl Championship and "I was goin' to Disney World"

Teddy needs to strap it on and stop playing so conservatively.   That does not mean play stupidly risky, but he must take some chances if he is to keep the Russel-Wilson led Seattle offense off the field.  As a former NFL QB, there are guys open - I can see it even on TV.  But, some guys are open in the NFL, when they are not open when you release the ball. He has to trust his receivers.

I love the Viking defense, and am glad I am not Russell Wilson who will driven into the dirt by the likes of Brian Robison, Everson Griffen, Linval Joseph and Sharif Floyd (I like him, even if he did play at Florida!).   Barr is an animal with athletic skills of an offensive player, and Kendricks is very active.   I'd hate to be on the end of a Harrison Smith hit!

So, c'mon VikeFans - from an old Minnesota quarterback, I believe - join me!!

#441401 Game day experience from enemy territory...

Posted by Wetlander on 05 January 2016 - 07:17 AM

I was asked to provide a full recap of my game day experience... I'm not going to focus too much on the details of the game itself, but more on the sights and sounds of a trip into enemy territory.

Before we start, I think every Vikings fan should try to attend at least one game at Lambeau Field. This may sound like blasphemy... but it IS a great stadium to watch a football game. The tailgating experience is unique with a large neighborhood and tailgating lots within minutes of the field.

With that out of the way, let's get into the game day experience Wetlander-style...

Sunday morning... Woke up early and made breakfast with the kids. I already had all my stuff packed up for the trip and helped get the house in order before I left for the afternoon.

Met up with a couple buddies (all Packer fans) in town and we hopped in my friend's pickup for the ride up to Green Bay. We were meeting two other friends there for a tailgate... these guys know how to party... Everything was set up when we got there around 3:00 p.m.

My friend's brother is a fantastic chef so we let him man the grill. We ate like KINGS knowing only one of us was going to feel that way later that night. Ribs, brats, bacon potato salad, pickled veggies... Mmmmmmmmm.

I'm sure you are all wondering... Doesn't a Wetlander tailgate involve some beer and booze? ;)

The answer is YES... But we kept it cool knowing we were going to be packed in a stadium for 3.5 hours. Here we did a round on the Shotski with some homemade apple pie.

IMG_0819_zpsgs6qseur.jpg?w=480&h=480&fit

Just about everyone within the immediate area did one... Including some Vikings fans that were tailgating in our lot as well. Everyone was having a good time and there was no animosity between opposing fans... Yet.

We packed up at 6:00 p.m. and started the long trek to the stadium. On the way, we passed a big beer garden that was gated off. Some Packer couple was snuggled up by the fence waiting to get their picture taken... Of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity at a photo bomb... I mean I was walking by just as the picture was happening. :D

So I raise my arms up and turn sideways as I'm walking. I must have nailed it because the Packer chick taking the photo yelled "You stupid fucking Vikings fans! Get the fuck out of here!!!"... Talk about an overreaction. I just chuckled to myself and kept walking. ;)

As we were getting close to the stadium, it was becoming more and more apparent that there were A LOT of Vikings fans at the game. Love it! I bet I high fived and fist bumped no less than 100 fellow fans before the game. Our group even stopped to chat with a group of Vikings fans on our way into the stadium. Exchanged some harmless smack talk and the funny thing was... No one was confident their team was going to win.

As game time approached, we found our seats and walked down closer to watch the player warm ups. I didn't get any pictures here... I was too busy soaking it up. The place was electric. Everyone knew how big this game was... An NFC North championship was on the line!!!

The picture below was from our seats in the southwest endzone. Great view and we were lucky to have most of the action happen on our end of the field.

IMG_20160103_213745_394_zpsz2xxfgty.jpg?

I had Packer fans all around me... But there were two Vikings women behind me. I'm guessing they were from a mixed marriage because they had Packer dudes on either side. With the game underway it was LOUD. Especially when the Vikings offense was on the field. One thing that really stood out was how much quieter the stadium was as the game progressed... The Vikings sucked the life out of that stadium by the end of the 3rd quarter. Even during the "comeback", the cheers weren't as hearty and deafening as it was at the beginning of the game.

As the clock hit zero and we batted down the last desperation pass... I had chills. WE DID IT. WE. WON.

BOOOOOOOOOOM

Just a great game yo be at and a fantastic finish to the regular season!!! The picture below was after we rushed the field after the win.
IMG_20160103_185633525_zpslwzxyj6l.jpg?w

As we left the stadium, there were a lot of sad faces and grumbling from the Packer faithful. Bwahahahaa

Vikings fans weren't too animated, but everyone I saw had a big smile and a glint in their eye as we nodded at each other exiting the stadium. Suck it Green Bay!!!

BOOM

Well everybody~we heard from the oncologist today and the bone biopsy was NEGATIVE!!

Now Don does indeed have the prostate cancer and he will need to have it removed, but the cancer did NOT metastasize.........so no bone cancer! Which means he can & will be cancer free!

Don will still be down for several weeks, but the life sentence has been successfully appealed!!

God is good!

Thanks for all the prayers & help from all my wonderful family & friends.......both physical and virtual!

We could not have gotten through this without you all!

I will continue to have my husband riding shotgun on roads less traveled!

#518082 Article - Pumpf-on-a-laptop (from Mankato)

Posted by pumpf on 06 August 2016 - 09:28 PM

Just got back from the scrimmage... and while I'm waiting for Jake's Pizza to get delivered... after which we're headed for the Vikefan campsite... I thought I'd give some thoughts about tonight's scrimmage.  I'm sure I'll forget alot of stuff I intended to share... so feel free to ask any questions.  It might jog my memory!

O-Line:

Kalil was underwhelming.  He was OK at times; at other times I could see (we were about 50 feet away) how bad his form/technique is.  Example: on a couple of occasions, his hands were too tight, bringing his shoulder together and narrowing his upper-body "base".  That made it easy for EG to get to Kalil's "edge" and beat him upfield.  On another occasion, Kalil's upper-body got too far over (past) his knee, leaving him off balance.  Basically, it seems like he just has bad feet.  And, as was pointed out to me by another Vikefan member, he put forth little effort during the OL hand drills.

On the other hand, his back -up (Sirles) looked like a much better (and more energenic) technician.  Then again, he was going against 2's (backups).

Berger played with the 1's (on the series that I could see).  Andre Smith looked really good at RT.  He had good feet and really did a good job or pushing his rusher past the pocket.

During the run periods, I saw us running alot of outside run, with our OL really hoofing it to get to the outside.  It appears to me that we are looking for quicker, long O-Lineman, rather than slow, strong, "low-to-the-ground" O-Linemen.  I don't know how it will be when the bullets start flying, but at least we appear to be able to threaten the "edge" with designed outside runs (not just AD bouncing it outside on his own).

WR:

Treadwell made some nice catches, but he also dropped some more.  In my opinion, his problem is mental.  He clearly has good hands- yet he drops ones that he should catch.  I'm no expert on receivers, but I sure hope that mental yips are correctable.  Otherwise, I'm worried about our shiny new pick.  Oh, another thing about Treadwell: he was blanketed by Waynes (yay for Waynes), who broke up the pass.  And, worse, he was put one-on-one vs. Sherels (which seemed, to me, a mismatch in Treadwell's favor).  Well, Treadwell ran a curl-in... and Sherels reached around and knocked it away.  In other words, Treadwell didn't exactly use his body to shield away the defender... even the littlest defender on the field!

On the other hand, Diggs and CJ look like a legit combo.  Diggs caught everything, was shifty as heck and made a spectacular TD catch.  CJ ran good routes, caught every ball he could and was reliably where he was supposed to be.  Thielen dropped an easy TD during 1-on-1 drills (after a sweet double move).  Speaking of double moves, I saw alot of double - and triple- moves... so I'm assuming that Norv must think that the OL is going to give Teddy more time.

I really do think that Wright could lose his job to Stoudemire.  Stoudemire looked good (shifty) returning kicks, caught everything and was REALLY quick.  He's everything that Wright was.. except younger and cheaper.  Mobo was invisible.

QBs:

Teddy was OK.  He threw alot of balls to all 3 levels: long, middle and short.  He didn't automatically check down right away.  In fact, he did a fair job of stepping up and continuing to look downfield (even though it cost him a sack once, when he actually could've dumped the ball of to Rudolph in the flat).  The other QBs... were not worth mentioning- other than (to quote our beloved Denny): they are who we thought they were.

DL:

There was alot of interesting stunts being run.  One of them had BRob standing up and moving around (like a LB) before he picked a lane to rush.  EG looked good... Floyd sat out.  Hunter was blocked pretty nicely by Smith.  BRob took some snaps at LE... and then, when he moved around, Hunter came in.  Some other guys got some reps at the edges, but none did anything that I noticed (which doesn't mean anything, since I couldn't see everything).

LBs:

Barr had a sweet in the 2-minute drill.  He was covering someone (I think it was Rudolph... but it might have been a RB), who was running a flag route to the corner of the end zone)... and then went up (like a DB) and picked the ball out of the air (in front of the receiver).  The back-judge ruled it incomplete (out of bounds), but I'd like a look at the replay; looked good to me. Kendricks tweaked something (he was visibly upset... but I don't know if that means anything).  I was really interested to see our backup LBs play.  What I came away with is Lamur is big (long)... and Brothers is small.  He looked like a DB (but for some other team, since our DBs are getting bigger and bigger all the time).  I liked his quickness... but I don't know if he's got enough "butt" to play in the middle.

DBs:

Our DBs were blanketing our WRs all night.  Our receivers had some success over the middle... but, in a game, they might get their heads taken off.  In a scrimmage, they can go in there with impunity.  Waynes looked better than Newman in one-on-ones... and Rhodes had another end zone INT.  I didn't see our "other" safeties do anything special... but I can say that Kearse looked really good in one-on-ones; and man is he BIG!  I've only seen this one day of practice, so take this for what its worth... but I like Kearse better than Sendejo.  (Of course, I've never liked Sendejo... so I might be a little bit biased.)  Exum didn't show anything; Harris was OK.  He was good in coverage... but I wonder if he can play the run like Zimmer wants his safeties to play it.

Defensively, we ran alot of "exotic" blitzes (slants).  Offensively, we were pretty creative with 2 and 3 TE sets.  I really liked the offensive set where Pruitt was the outside receiver (he ended up motioning back inside), with CJ or Thielen as the 2nd receiver... with Diggs in the slot (closest to the QB).  I'd love to see what we could do with that set (without the motion).

One other thing: I REALLY like our new TE.  He had GREAT hands.  I didn't really see his blocking (except for once, when he wiped out one of our backup DEs), but since that's his specialty (blocking) I assume that great route-running and hands is what's really going to get him on this team.  Obviously we haven't played any games yet, but I think he's going to stick.  I KNOW that he won't make it to our practice team, if we decide to cut him.

I guess that's it.  If you've got any questions, fire away and I'll answer them when I can.

#173849 A Christian Ponder Story From Camp

Posted by VikeFans on 31 July 2014 - 04:48 PM

Tom here - Every time the players leave the practice field, Christian Ponder has his helmet on and either runs past everyone, or hides (literally) behind a Viking official to avoid talking to the media.  As I am walking back to the media center, I see him about to get on his bike to go to his dorm.  Alone, and looking a bit sad.  So, I approached him not as a fan, not as media, but just to tell him congratulations on the birth of his daughter Bowden,  He lit up like a Christmas tree.   Said he was so excited and really thrilled to be a Dad.  I told him I would have preferred Tom, but at least Brad Johnson approved of the Bowden name.  He lau . ghed and said he really appreciated someone taking the time to wish him well

So, he may not have performed like we would have liked over the last few seasons, but hard not to like the person
