Dear Vikings Nation: How ’bout you enjoy 6-0, and stop whining about the offense?

Disgruntled Vikings fans should look beyond the 29th-ranked offense’s struggles, give it time to evolve and appreciate the team’s remarkable turnaround in turnovers.

The Vikings are 6-0, sitting atop the entire 32-team NFL, and would be wise not to fire coach Kevin O’Connell.

Repeat, Kevin O’Connell, the last undefeated head coach in the National Football League, should NOT be fired!

The Perpetually Perturbed Purple Pitchfork Posse doesn’t agree. Members are mad as heck about KO’s 29th-ranked offense and his 20th-ranked passer, Kyler Murray. So they’re bull-rushing social media and public gathering spots to annoy the rest of us with their unbearable unbeaten agony.

Overheard at a diner in Rosemount the morning after victory No. 6 …

“O’Connell’s offense is BRU-tal!” … “I turned the game off.” … “The Wilfs should fire O’Connell now before Brian Flores leaves!” … and the equally absurd, “The offense was better last year with J.J. McCarthy!”

Who knows how many people feel this way, but the utter lack of patience with the offense seems significantly noisy and typical of today’s NFL fan.

It’s like a car alarm going off as some of us who aren’t fantasy football statheads try to enjoy watching the NFL’s most surprising team find ways to win with great defense, the world’s greatest kicker and an offense that isn’t mucking things up with turnovers, like it did in 2025. And it’s worth noting the QB has only played 238 snaps.

“We’re Minnesotans, we don’t know how to enjoy success,” laughed former Vikings center Matt Birk when asked for his thoughts on this Minnesota misery.

The following is an attempt to help, preach some patience and point out one gigantic strength of O’Connell’s offense, knowing full well that, in making this effort, many of you will respond by saying, “THIS BUM SHOULD BE FIRED, TOO!”

Here goes …

Vikings offense has shown improvement in one key area

In what football universe can anyone argue that last season’s offense was better?

A year ago, the Vikings turned the ball over a league-high 30 times while ranking 29th in turnover differential (minus-9). McCarthy turned the ball over 14 times in the 10 games he didn’t miss or pull himself from because of injury.

(Stand down, J.J. idol worshipers. This is not a J.J. attack. In fact, the trade was a bad one because keeping J.J. in their hip pocket for injury insurance and his 2027 potential was far more valuable to the Vikings than a fifth-round pick.)

This year, the Vikings have turned the ball over four times — fourth-best — while ranking first in turnover differential (plus-7). Murray has turned the ball over twice in five games.

The 2025 Vikings gave up 94 points off turnovers. This year’s team has given up 19. Only one touchdown and two field goals have been scored off turnovers against Flores’ top-ranked scoring defense.

That’s not a shiny stat, like 300 yards passing. But not turning the ball over sure helps a defense hold opponents to a crazy-low 12.3 points per game.

Drives that go 15 and 12 plays and result in field goals — like the Vikings had against the Colts last week — anger the pitchfork posse. They also keep Flores’ pack of crazed dogs healthy, fresh and frolicking so they can maintain an NFL-record 86% blitz rate.

Football is like a puzzle. Sometimes, it’s OK for the offense to just not muck things up. Murray is completing 66.4% of his passes — ninth-best — and his two interceptions are fifth-best. He also hasn’t turned the ball over in his past 236 snaps.

Kyler Murray and Vikings offense have room to grow

O’Connell wants and expects much more as the season progresses. He knows you need to be better in December and January than you are in September and October.

He played for and learned under Bill Belichick, whose 2003 Patriots opened the regular season with a 31-0 loss to Buffalo and closed it with a 31-0 victory over Buffalo.

There are signs that the Vikings offense will get better. There’s also too much talent for it not to. And let’s not overlook the fact that the play that won the Colts game was Murray’s 35-yard scramble in the fourth quarter.

Let’s also not forget what happened on the next play: Murray threw with touch — something missing last year, for sure — on a 5-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson to put the Vikings ahead to stay.

Each game is its own story. It doesn’t matter that Murray only threw for 150 yards against the Colts. He won while making the play of the game and not mucking things up.

More could be expected of Murray as the Vikings travel to Detroit this week and return home to play the Bills on Nov. 9. But he is currently undefeated because he has done a great job helping the Vikings win the turnover battle in all five games he has played in (the Vikings also won it Week 2 against the Bears when Carson Wentz started). And when O’Connell’s teams win or tie the turnover battle, they’re 41-5.

If none of this is sinking in, let’s get in the time machine and return to Nov. 30, 2025. The Vikings were in Seattle. They lost 26-0 while turning the ball over five times with Max Brosmer at quarterback.

It wasn’t even December yet, and the Vikings were 4-8 and all but mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. They had turned the ball over 26 times in 12 games and were minus-15 in turnover differential.

Wow. What a terrific turnaround in turnovers, eh?

Try to think about that the next time you get the urge to complain about how awful you think the Vikings offense looks at 6-0.

The defense is a work of art, it’s a Picasso. It is a whirling dervish. It is a tsunami and a hurricane at the same time. Let it go unappreciated at your own peril, Vikings fans.

I'm enjoying winning ugly. I haven't seen a Viking defense like this one in a very long time.

You better prepare to tangle ass with this Vikings defense, because they are always hunting.
