Mac Jones I don’t consider mid, but I think in the right system could be very productive.

I think the combination of Mac and KOC could be a very good one. The last part is the part that I am worried about since KOC relies heavy on vertical and intermediate passing scheme that relies heavy on deeper, longer developing routes

  • Accuracy and Touch: When he has a clean pocket, good timing, and anticipation, he can drop in accurate deep passes—a trait he frequently displayed at Alabama and has flashed at times in the NFL.

  • Tight-Window Efficiency: Advanced situational analytics show he can be effective on deeper or high-leverage throws into tight coverage when the timing is right (ranking high in specific third-down, downfield accuracy metrics), though he operates best within systems built on quick rhythm and rhythm-based distribution.

There appears to be a philosophical shift

Combining the two stretches across consecutive seasons shows the evolution of the Minnesota Vikings' passing strategy.

When stacking the final five games of 2025 alongside the first five games of 2026, the Vikings have maintained an overall Average Depth of Target (aDOT) of 6.57 yards over this 10-game window. [1, 2]

However, looking at the two halves of this span reveals a significant contrast in how those short-yardage numbers were generated.

10-Game Trajectory Breakdown

While both five-game segments feature low target depths, they stem from completely different offensive circumstances:

  • Late 2025 (Final 5 Games): The 6.19-yard aDOT was a sharp, late-season dip below the team's full-season baseline. Facing heavy defensive fronts and protecting leads late in the year, the offense leaned intentionally into screens and short crossers to stabilize their game scripts before the postseason.

  • Early 2026 (First 5 Games): The 6.95-yard aDOT represents a complete philosophical shift. Rather than an organic dip, this is the foundational identity under new starting quarterback Kyler Murray. Head coach Kevin O'Connell has structured a rapid, quick-release passing attack to get the ball out quickly, helping the team march to a 5-0 start.
