Vikings Lead North; But Jacobs, Parsons Ramp-Up Timeline

The Border Battle between the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers just got more interesting for the next time they play. The Packers just got the green light on Josh Jacobs, and the timing could matter a lot more than people realize.

ESPN reported Friday that Green Bay’s starting running back is coming off the Commissioner Exempt list Monday. That puts him in position to practice next week and, if everything lines up, play against the Lions on October 25. The NFL’s investigation is still open, so the league left itself room to tack on more discipline if new details surface. For now, though, Jacobs is expected to be available after sitting the first six games.

Vikings Lead In The NFC North

Minnesota didn’t have to deal with Jacobs or Micah Parsons in Week 1. The Vikings won that one 39-22 at U.S. Bank Stadium and have since built a two-game lead in the NFC North. They’re 5-0 and sitting alone at the top. Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago are all 3-2 and bunched together behind them. The next time these two meet is Week 10 at Lambeau Field on November 15, and the Packers should look different by then.

The Timelines

Jacobs’ path back is the more straightforward one. He’s been healthy and able to train on his own while the legal side played out. Once he’s practicing, he’ll have a few weeks of full team work before the Vikings come to town. That should be enough time to get his timing back with Jordan Love, relearn the protections, and start taking regular carries again. MarShawn Lloyd has filled in with limited success in the run game. Lloyd has felt like a touchdown-dependent type contributor and not adding much yardage to help move the chains for Green Bay. Lloyd has only managed 112 yards rushing in five games. Having Jacobs changes the math in the run game and as a receiver. Green Bay has been able to stay afloat without him. They’ll be better with him.

Packers defensive star Micah Parsons is on a slower track. He’s still working back from the ACL and meniscus injury that ended his 2025 season, and has yet to get into a game or practice. The Packers are not going to try to rush Parsons back, though. Coming back too soon from that kind of injury often creates potential for re-injury. Some people around the team have pointed toward a possible November return, which could put him on the field for the Vikings or not long before it. Either way, his ramp-up will look different from Jacobs’. It’ll be more about building up practice reps, trusting the knee, and gradually mixing into the defensive calls instead of jumping straight into a full workload.

Packers Ramp Up For Border Battle #2

That gap is worth watching. Jacobs can accumulate real snaps between now and Week 10. Parsons, even if he’s cleared in time, will still be working his way into game shape. Minnesota’s defense has been solid early, and their offense has done enough to keep winning. But they haven’t faced a Packers team that has both its lead back and its best pass rusher on the field at the same time. Whether that version of Green Bay is ready by mid-November depends on how these next few weeks go for both players.

For now, the Vikings have a two-game cushion over the rest of the division while they fight to stay in contention. The Packers have a clearer picture on Jacobs and a cautious timeline on Parsons. The rematch is still a month away. The Minnesota keys to victory will look different when they meet up for the next “Border Battle”. Green Bay will have more firepower for the Vikings to have to deal with. Still a lot that can change between now and Week 10. For now, Minnesota has to take advantage of the bye and get healthy themselves to hit the ground running in the second part of the season.

You can be sure that the Minnesota Vikings will be ready on both sides of the ball. It doesn’t take much motivation for either team to get up for this game. Green Bay may be getting back two of their stars, but the Vikings will be waiting.
