Kyler Murray Hasn’t Even Played with the Full Set of Toys Yet

Kyler Murray finally looked comfortable in New Orleans, completing 24 of 30 passes as he rediscovered his legs, as the Minnesota Vikings downed the Saints 23-13. The Minnesota Vikings’ offense looked better than it had all season.

And Murray still hasn’t played with the offense Kevin O’Connell expected around him.

The Vikings Haven’t Put Murray’s Full Offense on the Field

Murray Barely Had Justin Jefferson in Weeks 3 and 4

When Murray returned from his concussion in Week 3, Jefferson technically started with him. Their union evaporated right away. Jefferson caught two passes on the opening drive at Tampa Bay before an ankle injury ended his afternoon.

The Vikings then ruled Jefferson out against Miami. The timing was brutal for a quarterback trying to find rhythm after missing Week 2. Murray was learning the offense in live action while his best target worked through an ankle sprain that carried into Week 5.

Murray’s early struggles look different through that lens. He had played only 11 regular season snaps before Tampa Bay, then lost Jefferson almost immediately. His first real stretch as QB1 came without No. 18 for nearly all of it, right as he tried to settle into O’Connell’s offense.

At New Orleans, Jefferson Returned, but Addison Didn’t Play

New Orleans finally gave Murray a full afternoon with Jefferson, and the proof was in the pudding. Jefferson caught six of seven targets for 79 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown into triple coverage. Murray also opened the game with 12 straight completions.

Jordan Addison wasn’t there, however. A hamstring issue kept him out after he was Murray’s best receiver in Tampa Bay, where Addison caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings entered Sunday with an uncertain receiver injury picture.

Then T.J. Hockenson left on the first pass play with a concussion. Murray still threw for 229 yards and a touchdown while completing 80% of his passes.

The encouraging part is pretty clear: Jefferson and Addison still haven’t shared a full game with Murray.

No Jordan Mason with Murray Basically at All

Mason and Murray have combined for almost no meaningful football. Mason fractured his thumb after Week 1 and landed on injured reserve, while Murray’s concussion ended his opener after only 11 snaps. By Week 3, Mason was already unavailable.

The pairing looked intriguing in August. During Murray’s lone preseason series, Mason ran three times for 17 yards while Aaron Jones added 27 on three attempts. The opening drive showed the bigger rushing approach the Vikings built over the offseason.

Mason is on track to return in Week 7 versus Indianapolis. If he gets there, Murray will finally have the second half of his backfield plan. That should make the offense less dependent on Jones carrying such a heavy rushing workload.

Murray Had His Best Game with Half the Offense Missing

The New Orleans performance looks even better once you account for the missing pieces. Darrisaw couldn’t play because of a concussion, while Addison was sidelined by the hamstring ailment. Mason was still on injured reserve. Hockenson then disappeared after one offensive snap.

The line was already without Donovan Jackson after his torn meniscus, forcing Ryan Van Demark and Joe Huber to handle the left side. Josh Oliver is also out with a torn biceps. Murray has spent much of September and October operating a patched-together offense.

He still completed 24 of 30 passes and rushed for 51 yards. Murray repeatedly punished New Orleans when the pocket opened, finally showing the mobility that was supposed to add another weapon.

His best afternoon in purple arrived without several players expected to make his job easier. Imagine his upside with a mostly full offensive staple.

The Best Is Yet to Come

The bye arrives at an almost perfect time. O’Connell said Darrisaw, Addison and Mason are among the players trending toward Week 7 returns. Hockenson’s concussion adds another situation to watch. A source told VikesNow that Hockenson will be “good to go” after the bye.

Murray should also benefit from something simpler: practice. He played one preseason series, suffered a concussion after 11 Week 1 snaps, and missed Week 2. His tiny preseason workload made September feel more like the preseason.

Jefferson is back. Addison could join him after the bye, while Mason may restore the original backfield rotation. Darrisaw’s return would stabilize the blind side.

If Hockenson clears protocol, Murray could soon see nearly the offense the Vikings drew up in August – – minus Jackson and Oliver, who are likely gone for all of 2026.

The ceiling for this team is through the roof if Kyler keeps improving. And I think he will.

Mason will help take the load off of poor olde Aaron Jones - my mvp after Reichard.

But I dont know if that'll change the running game contribution much vs what we've had season-to-date?

I think the real difference maker for K1 is getting his binkie (TJH) back along with CD.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

The healthier the team can be and the more starters that return, the better. Tough not to think that LT1, TE1, WR2 and RB1 all coming back after the bye won't be helpful. Add in more reps and more weeks of comfort in the offense for QB1 and it might be time to get the candy and nuts ready for Christmas. At least that's the hope. 🤞

What we got last Sunday was the mean. Take out those two horrific fumbles, and that’s a 30 burger easy.

Which is about 14 points more than we need.

Things could go two ways. We could get healthier and could develop our offense. Other option is that our injury riddled offense could get more injured.

I really think our OLine needs to have some sort of baseline of stability for our offense to really flourish. Less worried about our skill position players.

Missing Donovan Jackson is a blow, for sure. But you look around the NFL and there are these types of injuries everywhere. I love Joe Huber, but realistically he's going to suffer a bit more playing better teams and DTs....but I'm glad he's in there. Fries looks like a lost Baby Huey out there unfortunately.
