Kyler Murray is looking like Kyler Murray again
Kyler Murray is looking like Kyler Murray again
Through a brief appearance in Week 1 and a pair of starts in Week 3 and Week 4, Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray didn’t seem much like Kyler Murray. The offensive rookie of the year version. The two-time Pro Bowler version. The Road Runner version.
On Sunday, “meep meep” made its way to New Orleans.
Murray looked like the Murray of old again. He completed 24 of 30 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 109.6. He added 51 rushing yards on 10 attempts.
Per the Vikings, the performance made Murray the first quarterback in franchise history to throw for 200 or more yards with an 80-percent completion percentage while rushing for 50 or more yards.
The first hint of the offense waking up came last week, after the Dolphins cut the score of the Week 4 game to 12-10 late in the third quarter. Murray engineered the drive that extended the lead to five and then, after a three-and-out, Murray guided the offense toward consuming the rest of the clock.
Indeed, since Miami’s touchdown on the next-to-last play of the third quarter, Murray has completed 36 of 43 passes (83.7 percent).
It felt different this week, with Murray playing well from the start of the game to the finish. Even with a couple of significant momentum-shifting miscues, Murray and the Minnesota offense were never rattled. After the Saints returned a Myles Price fumble 87 yards for the game-tying touchdown, the Vikings drove 70 yards in six plays for the go-ahead touchdown. One more scoring drive provided the final margin of 23-13.
Now, the Vikings enter their bye with a chance to get healthy and prepare for games against the Colts, Lions, Bills, Packers, and 49ers in a Sunday night showdown in Mexico City.

If we can keep getting this and a few more explosives... oh baby...
Wish he would trust himself to throw the ball more. Just trust the talent.
I'm going to throw something out there FWIW...
There was no JJM distraction for the past ten days or so.
Things are stable.
Not saying that it's a factor, but it might be a teensy bit.
No distractions....just win baby.
Please God, just one Lombardi before I die.
For anyone who is tracking stats, last week Murray was 12/13 in the second half. Today he was 24-30.
So the last three halves (an odd statistic), he is 35-43 for a ridiculous 83.7% completion rate.
I think we're gonna be okay now.

I do believe though that Hockinson coming back and being healthy is critical. With Oliver done for the season, Murray likes throwing to those TE's. Bartholomew looks serviceable, maybe even better, but I do believe that trick play down the sideline was a designed play for Hockinson and my money would be on that he scores on that play.

That was a wacky play, but yeah Bartholomew misplayed that one.
I think Bartholomew has more potential than 'serviceable', but we'll see how that unfolds.
Kyler is obviously getting more comfortable in this offense. We finally got to see a little of that mobility magic that can be so frustrating for opposing Ds to deal with. Some might say that throw to Jefferson he was covered but who was going to get it if Jefferson didn't? It would have been incomplete, it was a hell of a throw. This game would have been a complete blowout without the TOs. I never once worried that the team wouldn't win, even when behind.
"I just think it's time," O'Connell said. "It's just game reps. I mean, you can talk about every practice rep you want against a scout card or even a training camp rep. But the game reps have been in it and it's his huddle and it's him running the show on the road, noisy building."
"Tremendous poise all day long, decision making, using his athleticism. I think this performance, like the second half from last week, is a lot for us to build on for sure." - Kevin O'Connell

That play at :42 made me stand up and cheer at the time. Not tempted by Jones in the flat, he keeps his eyes downfield, pump fakes deep, then resets the pocket and finds Jefferson. That was a thing of beauty.

Anyone critiquing Kyler’s TD throw to Jefferson is just looking for reasons to be mad.

Was it a risk to throw into triple coverage? YES.
Do you have the best receiver on the planet? YES.
Was it an absolute dime? YES.

Kyler Murray, Justin Jefferson, and Jordan Addison have been on the field together less than 20 times this season.

Kyler Murray hit 20.82 mph on the first-down scramble in the third quarter that helped set up the Justin Jefferson touchdown throw and catch, per @NextGenStats. That’s the fastest speed any ball carrier clocked in Week 5.

You have multiple things occuring at once. Kyler getting more comfortable in the offense. O'Connell getting more comfortable with Kyler. You add Mason and this team is suddenly starting to look like they can run over teams. You add that with the offensive weapons. We absolutely need a healthy Hockenson, but we have the talented WR. I still think Jennings can play some bully ball later in the season. With this defense this offense can just continue to get better each week.
Kyler Murray is growing more comfortable before our eyes. QBR by week this season:
