Vikings GM Nolan Teasley can make a franchise-altering trade after latest NFL news that could vault Minnesota to the Super Bowl

Kevin O’Connell has made the Vikings’ running game a major focus, but they lack a gamebreaker in the backfield.

Minnesota Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley isn’t afraid to be aggressive. He has talked openly about making trades and finding ways to improve the roster any way necessary, and a big swing at running back would fit that approach.

““We got to the point where the return made sense for us now to get an asset that, in all honesty, is going to help us in the future or it could help us this season,” said Teasley after trading J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants. “We don’t know. So, to have another asset that can help us continue to build because this season and the roster is going to constantly evolve, and today’s another example of that.”

Teasley’s background helps explain that mindset. He came from the Seattle Seahawks, where the front office pushed to improve the roster year in and year out. Just last season, Seattle made a couple of pivotal trades, including one for wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, and those moves helped vault the Seahawks to a Super Bowl. A few years earlier, the Seahawks sent significant draft capital to land defensive tackle Leonard Williams. He became the linchpin of a great defensive line that helped deliver the franchise’s second Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Now that he’s in Minnesota, Teasley has already talked about making trades. With news that the Eagles traded Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens for future draft capital, it appears obvious that they are loading up on draft capital to add a quarterback in the 2028 NFL Draft. The question now becomes whether the Vikings could make a massive swing for running back Saquon Barkley.

Why a Saquon Barkley trade makes sense for the Vikings

It’s a non-zero proposition to make a swing for Barkley. Running backs carry real value in today’s game, and the Eagles seem to be loading up on draft picks, with four selections in the top 64 of the 2028 NFL Draft. Plus, Minnesota has the ammunition to make a bold move without gutting the roster.

Adding Barkley would signal the Vikings going all in on a Super Bowl run this season, and it wouldn’t be the worst idea. Minnesota is 4-0, but the offense needs a little juice to generate explosive plays.

Even so, there are some intriguing things happening with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s approach on offense. The Vikings have made the run game a major focus, and they can do a lot of different things to maximize it. O’Connell continues to talk about prioritizing the ground attack, and the gap scheme runs have been working well. A player like Barkley would elevate everything Minnesota wants to do offensively.

“Coming into this year, [I] really viewed the early part of this season as we were going to be learning about what kind of football team we had. But at the same time, we learned towards the tail end of last year, some concrete principles that would matter for our team, and we needed to do those to start the season to give ourselves a chance to get off to a good start in the win column, which was protect the football, force turnovers, possess the ball and and you know allow our defense, which is coming into the year, what I felt would be the strength of our team,” said O’Connell on The Pat McAfee Show.

Barkley brings production as a runner and receiver

Two seasons ago, Barkley ran for 2,005 yards at a 5.8 yards-per-carry clip, far and away career highs, along with 13 touchdowns. He was the first running back to pass 2,000 yards since Derrick Henry in 2020, and just the ninth player in NFL history to achieve the mark.

His production took a step back last season, when he finished with 1,140 yards and seven touchdowns. That being said, Barkley’s value goes beyond what he does between the tackles. He provides both a dynamic rushing element and real ability as a receiver, with 362 career receptions. That total includes a whopping 91 catches as a rookie with the New York Giants. Barkley would also provide something to the Vikings they haven’t had in ages: a player with true home run threat ability.

That dual-threat profile is exactly what the Vikings could use. Barkley would be a fantastic addition to this offense, but the real question is how much he would cost.

What would a Barkley trade cost Minnesota?

The best comparison is the San Francisco 49ers’ trade for Christian McCaffrey. San Francisco acquired McCaffrey in his prime, sending second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-round picks across multiple drafts to get him.

Age is the key difference. McCaffrey was only 27 when the 49ers traded for him, and he’s just a year older than Barkley. That makes Barkley two years older than McCaffrey was at the time of his trade. McCaffrey was drafted in 2017, and Barkley entered the league one year later.

The Vikings would be trading for an older running back, and that should factor into the price. Still, that experience could make a huge difference in how this offense takes shape over the rest of the season.

Plus, his contract is very reasonable. He has a base salary of the veteran minimum of $1.3 million this season, and next year is also very reasonable. Barkley would have a salary cap hit of approximately $4,476,100 in 2027, with a base salary of $1.345 million and an option bonus due of $14.405 million, of which just $2.881 million would hit the salary cap. That is an easily manageable salary cap hit for the Vikings, as they have a lot of other needs to attend to this offseason, including wide receiver Jordan Addison and edge rusher Dallas Turner.

For the Eagles, it’s a little bit different. They would eat $26,426,000 in dead salary cap next season with option bonuses and signing bonuses that have already been paid out. It’s a lot of money, but they would save cash and get critical draft assets for the future.

By swinging for a player like Barkley, Minnesota would have everything it could possibly need to improve on offense. With the gap scheme already clicking, there’s a real chance the Vikings could open everything up and become a juggernaut. Whether Teasley is willing to pull the trigger is the question worth watching.

Trade offer: Vikings send 2027 3rd-round pick (via Philadelphia), 2027 5th-round pick (via New York Giants), and 2028 2nd-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for Barkley

Up until pulling his hamstring vs the Rams, he was running with the same burst he had two years ago.

Teasley comes from an organization that has frequently pulled off big trades. Cap hit is much smaller than anticipated. Keeps everyone fresh.

Ground KOC offense. Interesting proposition.

Would rather save the picks and draft a young RB on a rookie contract than bring in an aging often injured RB at a high salary. Would have been nice for Teasley to have been here before Walker hit the market.

It’s out there for sure, but below the surface it’s actually feasible.

I guess it depends how much Philly is willing to pull the plug already on '26....it just seems odd they'd do it after 4 games and being only one game out of first place. Seems like a huge stretch to me.

I think losing Lane Johnson was the last straw. (More on that in a second). The handwriting is on the wall regarding Hurts too. Carter has stopped playing after getting paid. Albert Haynesworth 2.0. Call him the Postman because he’s mailing it in.

If I showed you a list of all the Eagles hurt or out on IR you wouldn’t believe me. It’s apocalyptic. They called up a RB just to have 2 on the active roster. Smith is out for weeks with his hamstring. It’s fucking bleak.

Cap wise it works. You’d keep all three RBs daisy fresh. Another stamp on the roster for Teasley, maybe. It’s really not that big of a stretch. Sorta.

Ok, on Johnson, 14 year career. In that time he gave up something like 20, 24 sacks. Pretty amazing, right? He gave up 10 his rookie season. 👀 Calling him the greatest RT to play might be faint praise.

Definitely not as far fetched as it seems on the surface. Definitely more doable than it seems on the surface.

Philly is either gonna bow up or keep circling the drain, there's absolutely a chance they trade Barkley.

On the Vikings side-- He could reeeally help this year's team. It'd be an all-in move because now you're not moving up to get a QB in the draft any time soon. Hmm... I'm not totally opposed but I think we need to see more from Kyler in order to justify a trade like this. Trading away JJM and then trading for Saquon would have Kyler sitting very pretty at the negotiating table come March.
