Enemy Lines: Dolphins Face a Flores Revenge and Kyler Murray
Miami wants to run the ball, protect Malik Willis and keep its young offense moving forward. That plan runs straight into Brian Flores’ Vikings defense, which has made pressure and confusion its calling cards through the first three weeks.
The Dolphins are 0-3 and without De’Von Achane, their most dynamic weapon. They still intend to play physically and lean on the ground game, but Sunday’s matchup will test whether a reshuffled backfield and a young offensive line can handle Minnesota’s pressure without mistakes.
“We want to lean on our O-line. We want to lean on our players, just to be physical up front and move the ball forward,” receiver Malik Washington said. He also said the offense has made progress, but still needs to clean up penalties and assignments.
Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik plans to use several backs rather than search for a one-for-one replacement for Achane. Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon offer different traits, but both have been working within the same system.
“They all are here because they have a similar skill set as far as being able to run zone,” Slowik explained. “Good vision, one-cut, downhill-type runners.” Wright brings speed; Gordon is bigger and harder to tackle. Slowik expects Miami to lean into those differences without overhauling the offense.
Wright said he is ready for a larger role. “It’s a blessing,” he said, adding that he is “down for whatever” helps the team. He credited Miami’s offensive line for improving each week and said the backs want to build on what Achane had established.
Miami’s offensive line believes it is making progress. Center Aaron Brewer has seen the unit grow closer, and he praised rookie guard Kadyn Proctor and second-year guard Jonah Savaiinaea after their performance against Kansas City.
Proctor knows the Vikings will bring a different challenge. “You just can’t get really scared of it,” he noted. The rookie expects to see more pressure than he has faced before at this level, but the answer, he said, is to stay locked in on the blitzes and handle his assignment.
Slowik made clear that winning up front alone won’t be enough. Minnesota’s disguises force every eligible receiver and blocker to understand the same picture before the snap. If the quarterback sees one thing and a receiver sees another, the play can unravel before the rush even gets home.
“Flo does a phenomenal job,” Slowik said. “He puts a lot of pressure on the offensive players” and on the play caller. The Dolphins must identify who is rushing, who is dropping and where the ball needs to go. “Everybody is seeing it the same way,” he explained. “That’s the most important thing for us.”
That also means Willis has to make quick, clean decisions. He took responsibility for his fumble against Kansas City, saying it was one of the plays that could swing a game. In his Wednesday media session, Willis said he must take ball security seriously, particularly because he gets limited contact in practice.
Willis has watched Minnesota’s defense and knows it will try to disrupt him before and after the snap. He called it a “great defense” that does “a lot” to confuse opposing quarterbacks. He also cautioned against assuming the Vikings’ looks will be the same from play to play.
Hafley has similar respect for Flores’ approach. In his Wednesday press conference, he called Flores a “great play-caller” and praised Minnesota’s veteran defenders for communicating well enough to disguise coverages without losing structure. The Dolphins know what is coming in broad terms; the challenge is recognizing the specific answer quickly enough to execute.
Miami’s defense has a different problem: containing Kyler Murray. Defensive coordinator Sean Duggan said the Dolphins need coordinated rushes, whether the pressure comes from the front or the secondary. But the goal is not simply to collect sacks. “Affecting the quarterback isn’t necessarily sacking him,” Duggan said. Forcing Murray off his spot or making him throw before he is ready can matter just as much.
Linebacker Jordyn Brooks said Miami’s pass rush took a step forward against Kansas City, even without recording a sack. He pointed to pressures that knocked the quarterback off his timing and forced him out of the pocket. Against Murray, the rush must stay disciplined enough not to give him an escape lane.
“Such a great athlete,” Brooks observed. “It’s going to be a challenge to get him down on the ground.” Brooks said the Dolphins will try to attack Murray’s upfield shoulder and keep him contained. If Murray breaks free, they have to pursue without losing track of the rest of the play.
The Vikings present more than a mobile quarterback. Hafley said Miami will prepare as if Justin Jefferson is playing, despite Minnesota ruling him out Friday. He also praised Jordan Addison as “one of the most underrated and undertalked-about wide receivers in the league,” and called Jauan Jennings physical, strong and effective after the catch. T.J. Hockenson and Aaron Jones add further pressure on the defense, particularly if Murray can extend plays and find them late.
Special teams could be another swing factor. Myles Price’s 86-yard punt return against Tampa Bay has made him a central part of Minnesota’s early success. Miami special teams coordinator Chris Tabor called Price “dynamic” and “explosive,” adding that he had spent plenty of time preparing for the returner. Tabor said Miami must be disciplined and praised the Vikings’ return unit as a serious challenge.
That discipline is the thread running through Miami’s week. The Dolphins want to establish the run, protect Willis and keep their defense from giving Murray extra chances. To do it, they’ll need clean communication across the offense, a contained rush on defense and sound coverage on special teams. Against Flores’ pressure and Minnesota’s many offensive threats, a single missed assignment can decide a snap — and a series.
