Vikings haven’t lost at Soldier Field in more than 2,500 days

With a win on Sunday, the Vikings can tie a franchise record for most consecutive road wins against a divisional opponent.

The oddsmakers don’t care that the Vikings have never lost in Chicago with Justin Jefferson on the roster; they’re making the Bears a healthy 5.5-point favorite at Soldier Field versus Minnesota on Sunday.

Fresh off a 59-point outburst against the Carolina Panthers, the Bears deserve to be the favorite. But that doesn’t erase seven years of data that show the Vikings haven’t lost at Soldier Field in a long time. Minnesota is riding a six-game win streak in the Windy City.

You have to go all the way back to Sept. 29, 2019, to find the last time the Bears beat the Vikings at Soldier Field. On that day, Chicago won 16-6. At the time, it was the 16th time the Vikings had lost in their past 19 trips to Soldier Field.

Fun fact: The Bears have never won more than three consecutive games in Minnesota.

If the Vikings win again this week, it’ll tie Minnesota’s franchise record for most consecutive road wins against a divisional opponent. From 1968 to 1974, the “Purple People Eaters” won 13 in a row against the Lions, including seven straight in Detroit.

What’s going to happen this time around?

While Chicago’s offense worries every defense, Minnesota has more pieces to slow it down than Carolina. The Panthers allowed 552 total yards, including 292 rushing yards. If the Vikings can’t stop the run, Caleb Williams is going to torch them through the air, and the Bears will probably snap the home losing skid to Minnesota.

However, the Bears should be just as worried about slowing the Vikings with a defense that surrendered 478 yards of total offense to the Panthers. Bryce Young threw for 367 yards and three scores, and the Panthers averaged 5.7 yards per carry. If it weren’t for three turnovers, the Panthers wouldn’t have been blown out.

And the Bears have plenty of reasons to be worried.

According to Pro Football Focus, Chicago missed 15 tackles and gave up 157 yards after the catch. Minnesota only missed four tackles in a win over the Packers, but they were gouged for 239 yards after the catch.

A lot of the YAC allowed by Minnesota was the result of bringing extra rushers and leaving defensive backs alone in coverage, making them more susceptible to ugly numbers and failing PFF grades.

Six straight wins in Chicago are nice, but it certainly shouldn’t make Minnesota feel comfortable going into Sunday’s showdown.
